The NWR-SDC Database Team supports nearly 300 Oracle databases for the State of Florida, many of them mission critical clustered systems. The NWR-SDC Open Systems team supports more than 500 Linux/UNIX based systems, again with many clustered mission critical systems. These teams design, build, deploy, support, secure, upgrade and repair all of these systems and services.
Responsibilities- Database Service Delivery
- Provides quality and professional customer service. Coordinates with customers, vendors, and service providers to provide technical, team, and project oversight. Works with customers, vendors, and staff to resolve database technical support issues.
- Administers multi-vendor Oracle and IBM application software. Oracle databases. Manages and maintains the Open Systems server and Oracle database environment. Manages and maintains multi-vendor Open Systems server operating systems, including troubleshooting and patch management. Considers security and customer needs as part of any solution.
- Internal Processes & Support
- Follows all Open Systems, Database, and NWRDC-SDC processes and procedures Adheres to FSU/NWRDC-SDC processes and procedures including the change management process. Develops documentation for Open Systems and Database support processes, systems, and procedures when requested. Tracks time for Professional Services billing purposes. Provides second-level multi-vendor Open Systems & Oracle technical support assistance to internal and external customers Monitors Services Desk ticketing system making assignments or directing tickets to resolve issues in a timely fashion. Performs data gathering and analysis in support of billing, forecasting, and planning Performs related work as required.
- Systems Maintenance
- Coordinates multi-vendor Open Systems hardware and software upgrades to improve system reliability, functionality, and manageability. Proactively monitors server and application performance for reliability, security, and quality assurance. Maintains multi-vendor/multi-customer patch scheduling for both OS and Oracle database services, including coordination with customers, vendors, and staff. Identifies and performs process improvements to include tuning, hardware, and capacity management.
- Research and Planning
- Researches, analyzes, recommends, designs, tests, and implements new Open Systems, Oracle, database technologies, and EDI technologies and services to deliver cost-effective and technically efficient solutions to internal and external customers. Assists leadership in establishing objectives, setting goals, establishing unit priorities, and managing changes. Evaluates Open Systems, Oracle, and other product enhancements to ensure continuous product improvement. Assists leadership on technical and project-specific initiatives Stays informed of current industry trends and practices. Advocates for industry best practices during design and through the implementation process.
- Provides support and consultation to other members of the Open Systems support team and other duties as necessary.
- Participates in approved professional development opportunities per NWRDC's policy. Professional development and training is defined as learning undertaken by the employee to maintain and advance their skills, knowledge and competencies, specifically as they relate and add value to the job and workplace.
NWRDC provides support for a wide range of state and local government, as well as K- 20 organizations across the State of Florida. These organizations are dependent on NWRDC in order to accomplish their missions. This requires NWRDC to maintain services 24x7, even during times of crisis or emergency. As such, all NWRDC staff are considered essential staff for operations of the State of Florida.
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, MIS, or other appropriate degree and two years' experience or a high school diploma or equivalent and six years of experience. (Note: or a combination of appropriate post high school education and experience equal to six years.)
Security Awareness Training Certification
Preferred QualificationsStrong experience with Oracle, Open Systems and application service management. Strong experience with delivering Oracle database and Linux/UNIX based service design, debugging and support functions.

What is a typical day in this position?
Meeting with technical teams, customers, coordinating service delivery, debugging database, UNIX/Linux, application and network issues. In addition, this position requires regular after hours work coordinating service delivery several days a week.
What can I expect in the first 60-90 days?
In addition to learning the position requirements, NWRDC has many upgrades and projects underway that will make the first 90 days very busy.
