POSITION TITLE: Optical Manager
REPORTS TO: Director of Operations
PRIMARY OBJECTIVE OF POSITION: To interpret and dispense optical prescriptions and fit eyewear and contact lenses to meet the customer’s needs, providing exceptional customer service. To manage staff in a in a consistent high expectation work atmosphere. Maintain monthly budgets and sales projections.
LEVEL OF EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE OR SKILL SET:
Position requires high school diploma, GED or equivalent, plus one year of relevant work experience. Typing skills and some knowledge of PC’s necessary. Previous background should include demonstrated ability to deal with customers. Individual must be organized and detail oriented. In addition, position requires strong verbal and written communication skills.
MAJOR AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:
- Comprehensive understanding of the optical industry and product knowledge relevant to premium lens products, contact lenses, frames and accessories.
- Dispensing optician skills – ability to fit, adjust and repair eyewear, assist customers in recommendation and selection of lenses, frames and accessories
- Sales skills and techniques – ability to learn new technologies, product lines and explain the features and benefits to patients.
- Market and promote optical practice to maximize sales and build patient loyalty.
- Able to work in an independent and self motivated manner, while embracing a team environment. Brings a positive attitude to the job.
- Maintain monthly budgets and sales projections. Including; capture rate, expenses, sales goals, and frame board management.
- Manage department work schedule based on business needs to reduce over-time.
- Working knowledge of contact lens product and pricing.
- Uses a PC to retrieve customer information, data entry – including daily sales, payment, receipts, VSP and insurance billing/coding and general office procedures. Ensures that all information entered into the system is accurate.
- Inventory management and control. Maintain frame board management to stay into expected inventory and budget.
- Understands and communicates company policies and procedures, promotions and contracts in a diplomatic and cordial manner
- File and organize new and current product information.
- Understands and follows all company and manufacturer’s policies and procedures and complies with all attendance & safety rules and regulations, as well as compliance with HIPAA protected information.
- Train and educate staff to meet company guidelines, policies, and goals.
- Establish a monthly training for staff, covering both business, products, and sales goals.
- Must have all staff ABO certified within first 3 years of employment.

SECONDARY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY: Attends inhouse staff monthly and quarterly meetings. Provides proper training, work direction, and technical guidance for less experienced employees. Answers phones, handles appointment scheduling. General housekeeping. Maintains work area in a neat, clean, and organized condition. Models professional and ethical behavior. Articulates organizational goals and objectives to coworkers. Performs other duties as assigned.
