The University of Miami Bascom Palmer Eye Institute Naples has an exciting opportunity for an Ophthalmic Technician I.
The Ophthalmic Technician is responsible for assisting the ophthalmologist by gathering data pertaining to the patient's visual status and maintaining an environment conductive to the delivery of efficient, quality eye care. The Ophthalmic Technician is able to effectively perform appropriate clinical testing by previous formal education and/or clinical experience which allows an understanding of the theory, principles, and practice of eye care.
CORE JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Prepares exam rooms for daily clinical activities.
  • Monitors and maintains the appropriate levels of minor equipment, dry goods, and pharmaceuticals in clinic.
  • Responsible for detailed documentation in the EMR system.
  • Tests patient's far acuity, near acuity, peripheral vision, depth perception, and color perception.
  • Examines eye for abnormalities.
  • Applies drops to anesthetize, dilate, or medicate eyes.
  • Measures intraocular pressure of eyes.
  • Tests patient's field of vision, including central and peripheral vision, for defects, and charts test results on graph paper.
  • Measures axial length of eye using ultrasound equipment.
  • Completes intravitreal injection (IVI) preparation for patients.
  • Facilitates motility exams.
  • Performs other related tests and measurements.
  • Administers placement of hard and soft contact lenses.
  • Performs technical workups and special testing.
  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
High School diploma or equivalent
Certification and Licensing:
Basic Life Support (BLS)
COA preferred
Experience:
Minimum 1 year of relevant experience
Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:
  • Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.
  • Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion.
  • Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.
  • Commitment to the University's core values.
  • Ability to work independently and/or in a collaborative environment.
  • Proficiency in computer software (i.e. Microsoft Office).
