Job description

The Open Lab Manager reports into the NAM CTO Office and is responsible for the deployment, demand generation and day to day operation of the North American Open Lab. The successful candidate will lead activities working across the businesses and coordinate with current and upcoming development projects to help mitigate potential product and market risks through supporting activities for advanced prototypes, pre-industrialization, customer demos and feedback. They will also collaborate across the Open Lab network and must be able to influence and convince executive business decision makers across business units.
What will you do?

  • Lead the deployment of the Open Lab team in NA
  • Manage the resources and assets needed to scale the team as appropriate
  • Perform annual appraisals, salary administration and development planning
  • Manage the department budget and capital investments
  • Act as Project Manager to assure timely and effective execution
  • Work closely with GSC on the supply of prototypes and early production
  • Drive demand working with PMO and project teams to determine needs, scope, and schedules
  • Develop and manage regional partnerships to leverage local, external expertise for prototype part requirements and new technologies.
  • Maintain current knowledge of digital technologies, manufacturing processes and equipment technologies to leverage in a flexible assembly environment.

Lead and or perform tasks regarding specific Open Lab activities including:
  • Estimates and reports on product costs, capex and manufacturing Industrial expenses
  • Performs material planning analysis and implements strategies
  • Performs make vs buy decisions on components/products
  • Ensures product records are structured to support effective control of the information
  • DFA/DFM of components and assemblies
  • Assembly Line development including manufacturing execution systems and traceability

What qualifications will make you successful?
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechatronics, Industrial or Manufacturing Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent
  • Strong communication skills in English (written and verbal) are mandatory
  • Ability to succeed in a multi-cultural, multi-national in person or virtual environment across various functions (design engineering, purchasing, quality, marketing, finance, mfg operations, and others)
  • Proven ability to influence and convince through negotiation
  • 25-50% travel could be required including some international travel (primarily US & Mexico)

What qualifications are "Nice to Have"?
  • Team Management experience
  • Experience in manufacturing engineering in a production environment
  • Experience in a new product development environment, or related stage gate process
  • Understanding of digital technologies in manufacturing including lean digitization systems, smart tools, ERP, and manufacturing execution systems
  • Exposure to a broad range of sub and final assembly processes, and/or component fabrication processes
  • Lean Expert certification or demonstrated competence in Lean Manufacturing
