Occupational Therapist - Part TimePosition Overview

The primary task of the Occupational Therapist (OT) is to assess the OT needs of the children in Jamaica Plain's Milieu programs and to provide OT interventions. At times, the OT may also assist with program development and planning when directed.  The OT must adjust their hours to the needs of the children when they are present in the program, specifically late afternoon/evenings and weekends as needed. The OT is part of a multidisciplinary team. When applicable, the OT may supervise the Certified Occupational Therapist Assistant

 

The OT is an integral part of the Neurodevelopmental Unit (NDU) team - The NDU is a specialized Community-Based Acute Treatment (CBAT) service for children and adolescents with co-occurring mental health conditions and/or ID/ASD.  In addition to all the clinical service components provided within CBAT, the program provides clinical expertise and intervention specifically pertaining to youth with co-occurring mental health conditions and ID/ASD.

 

This is a full-time position, with paid holiday leave and accrued sick time, as well as a health insurance plan option.

CBAT for Children/Adolescents with ID/ASD providers agree to adhere to both the CBAT performance specifications and to the CBAT for Children/Adolescents with ID/ASD performance specifications.

The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the duties and responsibilities that will be required of the position, and additional responsibilities may be required. Employees are expected to perform job related tasks not limited to tasks specifically presented in this description.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Assess the individual needs of the program population by conducting individual sessions and direct observations in the milieu and provide occupational therapy interventions
  • Document intakes, treatment plans, session summaries, and letters to providers
  • Complete detailed OT Plan of Care reflecting resident’s strengths, realistic and achievable goals, and areas of functional challenges within 14 days of admission; revisit plan of care quarterly and as needed
  • Intervention to promote, remediate or accommodate for functional limitations across developmental domains (gross and fine motor skills, visual perceptual skills, activities of daily living (ADLs), instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs) and school readiness skills)
  • Active collaboration with Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) re: independent life skill development
  • Implement behavior modification strategies to increase positive behaviors and decrease/extinguish maladaptive behaviors
  • Implementation of emergency crisis management strategies (QBS Safety-Care)
  • Educate clients and families in appropriate therapy methods
  • Multi-disciplinary collaborative consultation and training involving clinical and milieu staff, caregiving systems and outside agencies as needed and appropriate
  • Attendance at rounds/meetings as directed by supervisor/manager
  • Special projects as assigned and only as directed by supervisor/manager
  • Provide education about occupational therapy interventions to staff including during new hire orientation
  • Maintain the sensory and Snoezelen rooms including training others, maintenance of supplies, and cleaning
  • Supervise Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants if assigned
  • Prepare for and regularly attend individual supervision to discuss assignments, quality of service, professional development, and work life balance
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS
  • Degree in Occupational Therapy from an accredited program required
  • License to practice Occupational Therapy in the state of Massachusetts, which is active and in good standing
  • Experience in a pediatric setting; new grads with a strong, pediatric-based Level II Fieldwork experience will be considered
  • Experience working with ASD/ID population
  • Familiarity with the implementation of Applied Behavior Analysis
  • Knowledge of sensory integration theory and functional application of these principles across home and community-based settings
  • Working knowledge of neuro and neuro-rehabilitation principles
  • Current CPR certification preferred
  • Excellent, concise communication skills (verbal, written, presentation); organizational skills and motivational abilities to balance productivity needs and required paperwork
  • Must be receptive and responsive to supervision and professional development
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills
  • Strong commitment to supporting, nurturing, teaching, and empowering children
  • Evidence of sensitivity and respect for client’s culture and socioeconomic characteristics
  • Provide therapeutic physical restraint as trained by IHC
  • Ability to bend, reach, move and lift 75 pounds
  • Visual and hearing acuity to perform job related functions
