Job Responsibilities

Responible for providing therapeutic nutrition for clients with high-risk and/or complex nutrition related medial conditions. Develop nutrition care plans for high-risk patient referrals and approve special and metabolic formulas. Participate in quality assurance processes for nutrition services.
Nutrition Care: Assess and diagnose the nutritional status of client with high-risk and/or complex nutrition related medical conditions as referred from WIC, MCH programs, as well as other health care providers. Develop and implement nutrition interventions including counseling, follow-up, referral, and coordination of care with other health care providers. Provide and document care utilizing the Nutrition Care Process (NCP) and according to program policy.
Special Formulas: Approve, document, distribute, and track special and metabolic formulas per program policy and procedures. Provide consultation and technical assistance related to special formulas to staff and health care providers.
Consultation, Technical Assistance, and Outreach: Provide professional expertise, consultation and technical expertise and assistance to health care team members, health care providers, community organizations, staff, and the public. Participate in the orientation and training of nutritional staff as requested. Serve as a preceptor for dietetic interns completing supervised professional practice experiences in the region.
Quality Assurance: Assist in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of MCH nutrition services. Assist with quality assurance processes for MCH program nutrition services.
Professional Development and Training: Update professional skills and knowledge to assure delivery of quality nutrition services. Participate in continuing education opportunities. Complete and maintain advance certification required for the position.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
State Minimum Requirements: Some positions require registration or eligibility for registration by the American Dietetics Association. A bachelor's degree in nutrition, dietetics or community nutrition and experience in a clinical, public health or institutional setting; or a bachelor's degree in any field, eligibility for registration by the American Dietetics Association and experience in a clinical, public health or institutional setting.
Agency Additional Requirements: Registered dietitian (RD) with a master's degree in nutrition, foods and nutrition, community nutrition, dietetic, public health or related field and two (2) years of experience in clinical dietetics or as a nutritionist in a public health organization providing clinical services; or a Registered Dietitian (RD) with a bachelor's degree in nutrition, foods and nutrition, community nutrition, dietetic or related field and five (5) years' experience in clinical dietetics or as a nutritionist in a public health organization providing clinic service. This position is intended for the licensed registered dietitian with a master's degree with an emphasis in public health or community health or a master's degree and advanced clinical experience, a licensed registered dietitian with a bachelor's degree and experience in clinical dietetics in a health care facility or in a public heath organization providing clinical services to medically high-risk clients. Must have a current license to practice dietetics from the SC Panel of Dietetics or be eligible to apply for a license to practice in South Carolina.
DHEC employees are required to participate in disaster preparedness during hazardous weather or declaration of an emergency. This involves being subject to duty and or call on a 24-hour basis.
You must possess a valid driver's license and have access to a reliable transportation.
This position may require working early (before 8:30 am), evening (after 5:00 pm) and/or Saturday's.
Ability to lift 30 pounds and stand for long periods of time, if required.
IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENTS: All new employees who are healthcare providers with job-specific exposure risk are required to provide documentation of immunity or be immunized against measles, mumps, rubella, pertussis, varicella, and Hepatitis B prior to beginning employment.

This position is part of the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control's (Public Health). The work performed supports DHEC's mission to improve the quality of life for all South Carolinians by protecting and promoting the health of the public and the environment. Effective July 1, 2024, this position will transfer to the South Carolina Department of Public Health created by Senate Bill 399 which provides for the creation of the Department of Public Health to assume the public health-related functions of DHEC.
