In support of our mission to improve the quality of life for South Carolinians by promoting the health of the public, SCDHEC of Greenwood is hiring a WIC Nutrition Educator to provide WIC services to Greenwood, Abbeville, and McCormick Counties.
This position is ideal for those who enjoy nutrition education and counseling, breastfeeding promotion, and empowering families through community nutrition.
Duties:
• Conducts individualized nutrition assessments to evaluate participant eligibility for certification on the Women, Infant, & Children (WIC) Program, including obtaining thorough health history, dietary recall, anthropometrics and biochemical data, evaluation of risk status, and referral screening. Prescribes tailored WIC food packages. Completes documentation for high-risk participants utilizing SOAP Note format. Provides and documents individualized nutrition follow up for low-risk participants.
• Develops, delivers, and evaluates nutrition education, training, and counseling to low-risk participants. Refers low risk participants to web-based nutrition education.
• Provides breastfeeding promotion and support to pregnant and breastfeeding participants. Screens all pregnant and breastfeeding participants and refers to the appropriate level of care. Issues and monitors breastfeeding supplies.
• Provides formula education and support to participants on WIC contract and List I special formulas. Monitors WIC contract and special formulas as assigned. Refers all participants on List II special formulas and metabolic formulas to the Registered Dietitian.
• Active participation as a member of a multidisciplinary WIC team in clinic/class scheduling, caseload monitoring, and outreach.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
State Minimum Requirements:
• A bachelor's degree in nutrition or food sciences, biology, dietetics, public health, health education or promotion, family and child development, dietetics, physical education, or early childhood education, or a related degree.
Or an associate degree in applied science, child development, dietetics, culinary arts, or a related field with at least two (2) years of relevant nutrition experience in a clinical, public health or institutional setting will be accepted upon HR approval.
Relevant professional nutrition experience in a clinical, public health, or institutional setting will be considered in lieu of the educational requirements upon Human Resources' approval.
• Must have or be willing to be trained in the specialized technical skills required to collect screening information and anthropometric measurements.
• Able to provide nutrition education, health promotion, and disease prevention education to clients.
• This position requires practical knowledge of the principles of adult learning.
Other Requirements:
Must possess a current driver's license and position may require use of personal vehicle or state vehicle. May be required to travel to other sites. Must be able to lift up to thirty (30) pounds and able to sit or stand for long periods of time. Some bending, reaching, stooping, and pulling. May be required to work late (after 5pm) or early hour (before 8:30am) and/or weekend clinics. All employees in accordance with the State's Disaster Plan, which includes hazardous weather, DHEC employees may be required to work in times of an emergency or disaster.
