POSITION TITLE:Nurse Manager - School-Based

RESPONSIBLE TO: School Health Services Director

DEPARTMENT/SITE: School-Based Health Centers

STATUS: Exempt Professional, Salaried

All the criteria-based duties and standards within this document will be performed according to established policies, procedures and guidelines within the department/site and Great Lakes Bay Health Centers.

JOB SUMMARY

The Nurse Manager is responsible for coordination for the program’s daily clinical activities. Provides direct and indirect patient care in collaboration with the School- based Health Center (SBHC) clinical team. Possesses organizational skills that exercise clinical skills to assure that clinical competencies are being met by the clinical team.

Must be able to prioritize work duties, triage patients appropriately, able to perform as a self-starter and demonstrate organizational skills that exercise independent decision- making for the clinical and grant components of the program. Must have a high level of leadership ability and excellent customer service skills as well as excellent communication skills to work as a team leader and team player in a small environment dealing with adolescent populations. Demonstrates a willingness to rotate from school- based sites on a daily basis and willing to learn billing aspects of SBHC and GLBHC.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

1. Participates in hiring, orientation, and ongoing training of center staff. Schedules staff and coordinates time off requests. Conducts employee evaluations in a timely manner, monitors performance, counsels, and implements appropriate disciplinary measures when necessary. Documents such activities.


2. Assists with patient care, procedures, medication administration, vital sign monitoring to expedite patient care; serves in the clinical position to cross cover at the designated school site when the MA or provider is absent to keep the site open and functions within the scope of nursing practice. Signature constitutes employee’s understanding of the requirements, essential functions and duties of the position.


3. Accurately screens, maintains, interprets, and evaluates the health records of students enrolled in the school-based health center. Assesses health history, BMI, vital signs, vision, hearing, oral health, sexual health, and substance use using appropriate prevention guidelines and screening tools. Observes the student for development and health patterns in making a nurse assessment and nursing diagnosis. Monitors compliance of current immunization regulations utilizing MCIR.


4. Utilizes nursing skills to triage students. Provide care for minor illness/injury conditions. Responds to emergency situations and recognizes when to notify provider and/or contact 911. Initiates referrals as appropriate.


5. Accurately and effectively delivers treatments that include venipunctures, point of care testing, medical orders or treatments written by the prescribing provider, and initiates appropriate lab tests based on standing orders and provider orders. Maintains lab tracking procedures.


6. Actively pursues a positive image for the health center. Assesses patients’ complaints and reviews with providers and/or administration as necessary. Serves as a liaison between patients, providers, and other departments. Follows up on patient questions and grievances regarding medical care and treatment.


7. Provides management of and participation in Quality Improvement projects and activities to assure compliance in meeting goals and objectives. Participates in designated meetings that enhance clinical practices. Maintains accurate documentation of medical records and ensures all chart documents are up-to- date, accurate, complete, and legible.


8. Actively pursues case finding for students at risk for poor health/mental health outcomes and case management. Provides education and counseling in areas of prevention/harm reduction, including confidential services, that may be either general information or specific to a population.


9. Assists in the formation of health policies, goals and objectives. Participates in quarterly chart audits, works towards meeting the goals and objectives of the implemented work plan and completes requirements for MDHHS reporting.


10. Communicates effectively with students, families, and others. Serves as a role model to the students and creates a supportive and therapeutic environment for the students and their families.


11. Maintains all medical supplies and medications in accordance with purchasing and pharmacy protocols. Ensures that equipment is operational and medications are current. Ensures that quality control checks are performed according to standards/protocols. Manages immunization storage and handling requirements according to local health department standards. Monitors cleanliness of Center. Monitors building maintenance. Informs appropriate staff.


12. Maintains responsibility for operations of the front desk including reception, scheduling, telephone answering, and on-site billing/collections in coordination with the School Health Services Director.


13. Ensures completion and timely submission of Incident Reports, Reports of Injury, employee return to work slips. Routes appropriately.

MARGINAL JOB DUTIES


1. Designs and implements strategies to provide effective health care to the students served in the school-based setting. Communicates with school officials, parents, and students.


2. Keeps updated on laws and regulations including minor confidential services and patient care standards as they relate to medical practice and nursing care.


3. Participates in committees and work groups as assigned. Participates in professional organizations that enhance school-based health community partnerships.


4. Enhances professional and personal growth by attending conferences, workshops, and in-services.


5. Monitor staff for proper dress including wearing of name badge and adherence to employee handbook policies.


6. Maintains providers clinic schedules. Approves provider time-off requests, in conjunction with the Medical Director. Responsible for staff payroll.


7. Assumes other responsibilities as assigned.


JOB SPECIFICATIONS


1. Education: R.N required, BSN preferred.


2. Licensure: R.N. (State of Michigan)


3. Experience: At least five years of nursing experience and the ability to

triage and use appropriate nursing assessment skills. Must be CPR certified. One to two years of supervisory experience required.


4. Skills: Participates in ongoing education as required for

maintenance of Registered Nurse licensure. Must have some computer skills that relate to preparing Microsoft Word documents and accessing email.


5. Interpersonal Skills: Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse population

population and adolescents. Ability to promote confidence, cooperation and good working relationships among employees and staff at all locations. Fair and consistent in all dealings with all staff.


6. Physical Effort: Medium


7. Hours of Work: Full-time, Flexible and varied due to school-related activities.

Attends some after-hours SBHC meetings and functions as appropriate.


8. Travel: Local travel between GLBHC sites is required. Some out of

service area travel for conferences may be required. Reimbursement in accordance with contract and GLBHC policy.
