GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

 

The Clinical Practice Nurse Manager is accountable for facilitating excellence in patient care delivery, providing operating efficiencies and insuring compliance with hospital and regulatory policies and practices. This role is a vital leadership management role within the Dermatology Service. Drawing on a broad understanding of clinical and hospital practices and policies and displaying a high degree of initiative and independent judgment, the Clinical Practice Nurse Manager will continually assess and direct a wide range of clinical and programmatic issues including nursing personnel management, long-range planning, practice growth and hospital relations.

 

The Dermatology Surgery Unit/Mohs surgery and other related cutaneous surgery. Patients are seen at 50 Staniford Street Boston, MA. FY18 patient visit volume totaled 4,230 with 564 visits being MOHS. There are 4 physicians, 2 RN's, 1 LPN's, 1 Medical Assistant, 2 Patient Service Coordinators and 1.85 FTE histotech. The Nurse Manager spends approximately 25% of the time working as an RN assisting physicians with patient care and 75% administratively managing the units.

 

The Dermatology Laser & Cosmetic Center treats patients seeking laser and other cosmetic services. In addition to cosmetic patients, there are a smaller number of patients being seen for medically necessary services. There are 20 lasers available to treat patients. There are 7 attending physicians, 2 LPNs, 1 medical assistant and 3.5 FTE patient service coordinators. Dermatology residents rotate though the center during their training. FY18 volume was ~8,500 patient visits.

 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Patient Care Management:

         Provides and maintains a climate in which effective patient focused care is assured throughout the patient's visit.

         Responsible for excellence in patient focused care delivery including implementing and evaluating approved policies and procedures necessary for the delivery of such care; evaluating customer satisfaction and recommending and integrating changes as appropriate.

         Collaborates with physicians, administration, nurses and other health care professionals and support personnel to determine and evaluate the delivery of outpatient care; address and solve unit care issues.

         Actively participates in department and hospital committees including the Quality and Safety committee within Dermatology.

         Responsible for expertise in clinical dermatology care and preserving the integrity of the provider/patient relationship.

 

Personnel Management:

                     Interviews, hires, and evaluates all nursing support staff including RN's, LPN's and medical assistants for Dermatology Surgery and oversees the process in Dermatology Laser and Cosmetics (DLCC).

                     Works with the Human Resource department on job postings for recruitment of nursing staff

                     Manages and provides direction to nursing support staff (nurses, medical assistants, PSCs.)

                     Determines staffing patterns and required personnel complements to meet the needs of the patient population.

                     Promotes the development of self-managed teams engaging unit-based staff in the decision-making process as needed.

                     Oversees development and implementation of quality assurance projects.

                     Delegates responsibility and authority to appropriate staff and develops systems for effective follow up.

                     Provides opportunities for staff to participate in decisions related to the unit/service/department.

                     Plans, directs, and participates in regularly scheduled meetings to share information and problem solve with unit personnel.

                     Implements corrective action according to hospital policy as needed.

                     Collaborates with service and other educational resources to facilitate learning experiences for staff.

                     Updates job descriptions for all support staff annually

                     Weekly review of KRONOS timekeeping system for personnel and address issues as they arise.

 

Administration/Business:

                     Promotes, develops, and evaluates various processes and systems along with identifying, communicating, and resolving systems issues.

                     Proactively seeks and acts upon patient, families and staff feedback and initiates appropriate action.

                     Accountable for hospital and regulatory standards

                     Maintains the highest quality of work while continually measuring outcomes to ensure the most effective and efficient processes.

                     Ensures effective management of resources oversees the management of inventory levels.

                     Works with Transport, Clinical Laboratories and Patient Advocacy to resolve any patient concerns.

                     Prepares weekly schedule for Derm Surgery

                     Orders equipment as needed for patient care and ensures a safe and secure storage unit for medical supplies.

 

Operations Management:

                     Maintains a safe environment for patient/staff while executing daily operational activities necessary for effective dermatology practice functioning.

                     Maintains policies and procedure manual for Dermatology Surgery including infection control, medication management, clinical workflows, and new employee on-boarding. Updates on an annual basis or as changes occur.

                     Directs day-to-day activities.

                     Review Quality and Safety data and initiates corrective action as indicated.

                     Interprets and enforces with staff and others the appropriate use of equipment, supplies, and physical facilities.

                     Participates in planning current and long-term projects to improve the operations.

                     Designs, evaluates, and monitors practice workflow to ensure highest levels of patient safety and satisfaction, clinical and service excellence, and operational efficiency.

                     Oversight of prior authorization process.

                     Reviews CG-CAHPS to identify potential areas of improvement within the practice.

Collaboration:

                     Exhibits diplomacy and communicates with others in a manner that demonstrates respect, professionalism, and a commitment to the team.

                     Offers assistance that supports the team and ensures that patient needs are not compromised.

                     Identifies learning needs and goals and designs a plan to meet them.

                     Maintains necessary clinical skills through self-directed clinical practice.

                     Establishes self as a resource for other areas where expertise may be required.

                     Supports and participates in departmental and institutional committees.

                     Collaborates with leadership in identification of current and future service needs and shares responsibility for meeting these needs.

                     Adheres to departmental requirements for required training.

                     All other duties as indicated within scope of practice.

SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED: 

 

                     Demonstrates clinical competence in the areas of Medical Dermatology

                     High Proficiency in all RN competencies required.

                     Demonstrates leadership/managerial potential which include interpersonal competence and organizational skills.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY (if applicable): 

 

         Provides supervision and direction to nursing/clinical staff approximately 15 FTE's.

         Oversight of the overall units' operations

         Oversees all human resource functions including recruiting, hiring, scheduling, performance review and professional development of nurses and medical assistants.

 

 

FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY (if applicable):     

 

         Assist with formulating the annual capital budget.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

 

         Directly supports the patient clinical workflow within a busy specialties in Medical Dermatology outpatient clinic Monday - Friday.

         Patient care in an out-patient, primary care setting
