Job Summary
The DNR is currently seeking to fill up to two (2)temporary, Full-Time Natural Resources Technician - Wood Duck Telemetry Project Technician with an anticipated start date of April 1st, 2024, and anticipated to end in July 2024. This position serves to assist with a research project evaluating habitats used by marked Wood Ducks. Wood Ducks are an important component of forest wetland ecosystems. The technician will assist the Research Scientist 2 and NRS-Senior in field work, including trapping, radio-marking, and radio-tracking Wood Ducksduring the nesting season, and collecting information on the habitats these birds use. These positions will be based at the Wetlands Research Group office in Bemidji, MN, with travel to field sites.
Responsibilities include:
  • Collect biological data in the field responsibly and safely for the Wood Duck Telemetry Project or other projects as needed, including collecting samples and data under challenging weather conditions and sometimes for long periods of time.
  • Perform accurate entry of collected data into datasheets, tablets, and databases.
  • Assist lead worker with summarizing data into tables, figures, or summaries.
  • Ability to work outdoors in adverse winter weather and environmental conditions.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
  • Ability and knowledge needed to collect biological data in the field responsibly and safely, including under challenging weather conditions (cold, rain, snow), sometimes for long days, or at night.
  • Skills in digital data entry and mapping applications such as Survey 123 and Field Maps.
  • Knowledge of forest habitats and tree species foundin northernMinnesota.
  • Knowledge of forest wildlife (particularly cavity nesting waterfowl) habitats in Minnesota.
  • Knowledge of wetland habitats in Minnesota.
  • Ability toaccurately enter scientific data into data tablets, datasheets, and databases.
  • Knowledge of use of field maps and GPS units to navigate betweenand within field sites.
  • Knowledge of radio-telemetry techniques.
  • Knowledge of trapping techniques used for capturing and handling waterfowl.
  • Ability to drive 4WD trucks, use canoes, and/or operate outboardmotors and boats as needed.
  • Ability to work as part of a team, or independently as necessary to complete required tasks.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in wildlife biology, wetland ecology, or a related field.
  • Experience using digital data entry and mapping applications including Survey 123 and Field maps.
  • Experience constructing, repairing, and maintaining waterfowl trapping equipment.
  • Experience safely operating and maintaining equipment trucks (4WD), and trailers.
  • Experience with GIS software, such as ArcGIS.
  • Experience with hand and power tools.
  • Experience navigating in very rural areas.
  • Knowledge and experience sufficient to apply for and attain a bird banding sub-permit.

Additional Requirements
This position requires an unrestricted Class D Driver's license with a clear driving record.
