Job Description
The American College of Physicians (ACP) offers undergraduate college students an opportunity to gain insight and valuable exposure to medical education and career options in health administration, public policy, and population health. ACP is the premier education, publishing, advocacy, and professional membership association for U.S. and global physicians trained in the specialty of Internal Medicine. The ACP Summer Internship Program is designed to help expand diversity within U.S. healthcare by providing experience that will inspire students to consider the variety of career opportunities to influence health, medicine, and public policy.
ACP is seeking students who have completed their 3rd year and are currently enrolled in a 4-year undergraduate college or university. The internship program will provide a paid, 8-week summer opportunity for students who have demonstrated an interest in medicine, public health, public policy, or healthcare administration disciplines. During the internship, students work both virtually and in-person at either the ACP headquarters in Philadelphia, PA or in the Washington, DC office under the guidance of department supervisors and mentors. The program involves project assignments and career-related activities within the student’s assigned work area. In addition, students will work with other interns and departments to learn of their projects, and gain context to the interdependent components of healthcare through site visits.
The ACP Summer Internship Program is designed to provide students with practical experiences that challenge and inspire them and serve as a complement to their classroom experience. They will further their knowledge and exposure to team-based program design and delivery.
WHAT IS AN INTERNAL MEDICINE PHYSICIAN, AND WHAT IS THE ACP?
Internal medicine (I.M.) physicians are specialists who apply scientific knowledge and clinical expertise to the diagnosis, treatment, and compassionate care of adults across the spectrum from prevention and wellbeing, to complex illness. ACP is a national organization of internal medicine physicians, the largest medical-specialty organization, and second-largest professional physician group in the United States. Our 161,000 members include I.M. specialists, subspecialists, residents, and medical students. The program does not provide any housing allocation. Participants are responsible for arranging their own housing and transportation. Both the Philadelphia and DC offices are located within their respective central business districts and are easily accessible by public transportation.

Medical Education and Instructional Design – Philadelphia
The medical education team designs and develops medical educational resources and programs to support physicians continuing medical education needs. Internship role is Ideal for students who are pre-med, interested in education, public health or communications.
Chapter Activities – Philadelphia
The ACP chapters are communities of Internal Medicine physician members who organize at the state or regional level. In contrast to national-level ACP activities, chapter activities may be more specifically targeted to meet the health or policy needs of a given geographic area. Internship projects will support development of projects and support on the regional level. This internship project role is ideal for students interested in public health, health equity, education, or health policy.
Publishing – Philadelphia
ACP is home to several influential clinical publishing products that serve the research and educational needs of I.M. physicians, encompassing scientific and scholarly print publications (including our academic journal Annals of Internal Medicine), web sites, and apps. This role is ideal for students who are pre-med, interested in academic research, or media/communication.
Executive Administration/Strategy and Innovation – Philadelphia
ACP’s executive office provides oversight for governance, membership, business operations, and strategic planning. This facilities coordination of ACP’s strategic and mission focus into operational activities, monitors trends in the evolving healthcare system, and establishes appropriate external partnerships to positively impact the care delivery system. This role is ideal for students interested in health administration, business administration, and/or a clinical career.
Public Policy and Regulatory Affairs – Washington, D.C.
ACP’s public policy and regulatory affairs team reside in the Washington, D.C. office. As our “boots on the ground” in the nation’s capitol, the public policy staff elevate the voices of Internal Medicine Physicians, to promote and influence health policy that benefits physicians and patients. Opportunities in this division are ideal for students interested in healthcare policy, advocacy, health administration, and the clinical practice of medicine.
Grant Program Delivery (Public Health) – Washington, D.C.
ACP’s grant program delivery department provides innovative clinical education resources and programs, from funded grant sources, to and for internal medicine physicians, to improve quality of care delivery. Programs may focus on enhancing immunization screening rates, or improving patient safety measures, to help move the needle on key public health and clinical objectives.
