Job description

Position: Navy JROTC Naval Science Instructor
Reports to: Principal
Terms of Employment: Minimum of 12 months in Haywood County Schools
Pay Grade: Commensurate with experience
FLSA Status: Exempt
Nature of Work
Mentoring students in the JROTC Program
Providing instruction from JROTC and Leadership curriculum, providing
instruction in drill and ceremony, providing instruction in PT activities and the proper
wear of the Navy Uniform.
Education and Experience
Associate's degree from accredited institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or must obtain one within 5 years of initial employment as a result of the FY 2007 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA)., extensive experience managing complex programs, and many
extensive experience working with youth groups.
Certification and Licensure Requirements (if applicable):
Complete the mandatory Navy Junior ROTC Instructor Certification Course as
a condition of certification.
Essential Functions/Typical Tasks
Conduct Academic Classes A Navy Junior ROTC Instructor is expected to prepare
for and teach periods of instruction of 45 to 90 minutes each, for as many as 3
periods per day, depending on a particular school's schedule. Each class period may
contain 30 students (possibly more in unusual circumstances) holding a range of ages
and maturity levels, and coming from different socio/economic backgrounds. Teaching
academic classes involve significant organizational, interpersonal and communication
skills, and a high degree of patience.
Lead Before and/or After-School Activities A Navy Junior ROTC Instructor is
expected to coordinate and lead a variety of school activities, possibly held before or
after each school day, both indoors and outdoors. These after school activities may
include physical training events, academic clubs, rocketry teams, marksmanship teams,
along with performing drill instruction and demonstrating drill sequences. Leading after
school activities involve significant organizational skills, strong teambuilding skills, and
physical stamina.
Lead Off-Campus Events A Navy Junior ROTC instructor is expected to lead field
trips to historical sites, visits to local government agencies and military installations, and
to march in parades with their cadets. Leading off campus events involves significant
organizational skills, physical stamina, and the ability to remain calm in hectic situations.
Be an Ambassador of the Navy An Navy Junior ROTC instructor is expected to
exemplify a positive image of the Navy at all times by conducting themselves in a
highly professional manner, in both their words and their actions. Additionally, a Navy Junior ROTC instructor is expected to maintain a professional military appearance
in uniform, and to comply with Navy Junior ROTC weight and body fat standards.
Complete any additional state and/or local school district mandated teacher
certification or continuing education requirements. Any additional certification
requirements above the basic Navy Junior ROTC instructor certification must be
accomplished at no expense to the Navy.
Successfully incorporate Navy Junior ROTC-approved interactive learning
software/hardware with classroom instruction, and have a competent knowledge of
curriculum planning, Navy educational programs, drill and ceremonies, and
educational administration, including tests and measurements. Academic,
administrative, logistical, financial support tasks, and after-school activities will be
equally shared by all instructors as regular duties.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Instructors will exhibit only the highest levels of personal and professional conduct while
serving as a Navy Junior ROTC instructor. Instructors perform duties, accept
responsibilities, and meet standards as prescribed by applicable Department of Defense (DoD), Navy and Navy Junior ROTC instructions. Instructors will directly supervise all cadets participating in official NJROTC unit events, NJROTC community service events and other unit activities (e.g. drill competitions, curriculum-in-action trips, base visits, etc.) that enhance or supplement the program.
All Navy Junior ROTC instructors are deeply involved in their communities. They teach Navy JROTC and leadership education curricula. They also serve as liaisons between the Navy and civilian agencies, and perform career and performance counseling for NJROTC cadets.
Instructors devote themselves to cadets in the classroom and during extensive LDRs. Their hard work and devotion have resulted in a Navy Junior ROTC program that's highly acclaimed at the local and national level.
Physical Requirements
The physical requirements include being able to sit or stand for an extended period of time,
sufficiently mobile to ensure the safety of students, speak clearly so that others may
understand clearly and hear and understand speech at normal levels. NJROTC Instructors must maintain the physical fitness standards set forth by the Navy.
