Network Engineer

You must be able to travel to our office 3/4x a week. 

Role Purpose

The primary role is to assist in the smooth operation of EXA’s Global Network under the supervision of the Network Operations Manager who is responsible for the Global Operation. This is a large-scale network built on a multi-platform environment. The role is varied and demands a totally flexible approach to all tasks associated with this position. The successful candidate should be comfortable working within an expanded and very fast paced team environment.

Key responsibilities

· Assisting in customer test & turn-up (DWDM/ADM/Ethernet)

· Customer circuit trouble shooting with the aid of industry standard test equipment

· Liaising with all EXA NOC Engineers and Network Operations department in other countries

· Report writing and creating / maintaining inventories

· Assisting in the management of a full Planned Preventative Maintenance program on the Network

· Network installations (remote and local where necessary)

· Monitoring and training of other members of staff when applicable. Contractors and visitors will be inducted and periodically monitored when they are on site. Permit to Work documentation will be raised prior to commencement of work and closed upon completion; this will usually involve requesting and assessing Method Statements, Risk Assessments and /or Back-Out Plans.

· Non-routine duties will be allocated as deemed necessary.

· Install & test new equipment internally and on new and existing COLO and POP sites

Individual Profile

· Experience in optical networks and technical facilities required

· Minimum of 2 years’ experience in an operational environment in a medium to large scale carrier / ISP would be a definite advantage.

· Experience in a role with hands on complex technical problem solving as a daily occurrence on any or all of EXA’s Layer1 / 2 / 3 networks

· Degree in Engineering related field – preferably Telecoms / Datacomms modules covered or relevant experience

· Experience with hands on installs of power and telecoms equipment

· Strong fiber management principles

· Hands on experience with test equipment – OSA/OTDR/COTDR/BERT/RFC 2544 test sets

· Experience with DC & PDU installs & power rectification

· Understanding of Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning technologies. HVAC.

· A solid understanding of SONET/SDH/DWDM principles is required

· Optical network installation and troubleshooting skills will be advantage

· Ability to work independently and as part of a team

· Self-motivated

· Excellent written and communication skills

· Creative problem solving abilities

· Knowledge of network monitoring technologies, protocols and other administrative tools

· Strong PC skills proficient in Microsoft office and its components.

Physical Requirements

· Ability to work at heights installing fibers, DC power, replace bulbs & filters, inspect chillers….

o Less than 10’ (3 m) in height without fall protection equipment.

o Maximum 20’ (6 m) in height with adequate/approved fall protection in place.

· The ability to lift, unpack, inventory and place in storage shipments of all kinds with a maximum weight of 50lbs (23 kg).

· Must be able to assist with the installation of telecom equipment with a maximum weight of 80lbs (36 kg).
