Natural Resources Technician

Job Purpose

This position carries out tasks related to the maintenance and restoration of Natural Resources and open space, rehabilitation of sensitive ecosystems, and stewardship of developed green infrastructure as defined by the Superintendent of Parks and Recreation.

Duties and Responsibilities

Working under the direct supervision of the Director of Maintenance Services, this position requires task planning and direct execution of technical duties:

• Operate equipment and tools to maintain park land and structures.
• Observe and report status of park facilities and Natural Resources.
• Assists with development, inspection, implementation, and evaluation of natural resource management and reforestation plans for the department, including but not limited to natural trails, native prairies, pollinator gardens, wetlands, wooded areas, open space, turf lawns, stream banks, and riparian areas.
• Assist with educational and recreation programs in the community.
• Organize, lead, and supervise volunteer groups in various educational and conservation efforts.
• Performs clerical duties as required.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of natural resource land management practices, vegetative management, invasive species control, and wildlife conservation planning.
• Ability to obtain required certifications/licenses as outlined by the Department; ability to maintain or obtain an Applicators license within 6 months of employment.
• Valid driver’s license plus physical ability to walk in and observe all types of terrain.
• Knowledge of and physical ability to operate tools and equipment normally used in park maintenance; ability to keep create and maintain accurate records.
• Demonstrated ability to verbally communicate with other people in an effective manner.
• A minimum of a high school diploma, or equivalent, is required, plus a minimum of three-year work experience in park maintenance, natural resource management, or related field.
• Ability to work autonomously at times and make independent decisions.
• OSHA 10 Certification within one year of hire, updated every 5 years.

Working Conditions

• The year-round position will be part time and scheduling will fit the needs of the department including weekday, weekend, or evening hours. Typical shifts are 4-8 hours on a seasonal basis.
• This position requires the ability to work outdoors in a variety of natural terrains and weather conditions.
• The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, extreme heat or cold, snow, sleet, ice, wind.

Physical Requirements

• Use of tools and equipment as trained for normal park maintenance. Most work will take place outdoors in a variety of weather conditions. The technician’s work in the parks will bring him/her into casual contact with the public.
• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to walk, sit, talk, hear, finger dexterity, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls, reach with hands and arms, and bend over. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
• The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
