SDOT has an exciting Multi-Modal Engineer (Associate Civil Engineer) opportunity with our Capital Projects Division (CPD). Join a team of professionals whose vision is "to be the most innovative and responsive transportation agency in the region." This Engineer will play a lead role in the design and construction of capital improvement projects within the City of Seattle and serve as the technical design lead and project engineer for civil infrastructure projects likely focused on bicycle, transit, and pedestrian safety/mobility projects. Projects may include work related to Neighborhood Greenways, Bicycle Master Plan, Safe Routes to School, Transit Priority Corridors, Vision Zero, and Arterial Pavement Rehabilitation.
  • Performs preliminary and final analysis and design for intersection geometrics, ADA-compliant curb ramps, sidewalk and roadway grading, drainage, traffic calming, street signage, bikeways, multi-use trails, Green Stormwater Infrastructure, pedestrian lighting, and pedestrian signal improvements.
  • Works closely with SDOT Divisions Transportation Operations, and Project Development to implement operational improvements to further our mission towards Vision Zero.
  • Prepares plans utilizing AutoCAD and Remix software.
  • Writes and reviews technical specifications, reports, memoranda, transmittals, and other written communications.
  • Develops preliminary concepts and alternative analysis.
  • Performs quantity take-offs and cost estimating.
  • Participates in meetings and presentations, both public and internal.
  • Coordinates project activities with other staff including draft, surveyors, project managers, design leads, etc.
  • Performs and documents engineering analysis and calculations in support of design work and other related activities in support of projects.
  • Works with project managers and project engineers to coordinate, resolve issues, and support efforts to keep projects within scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Provides support to supervisors and project managers for the preparation of permit applications and accompanying plans/specifications packages.
  • Researches existing conditions and performs technical field investigations and inspections as required to support a project through design and construction.
  • Supports department goals in promoting diversity and social justice in keeping with the City's Race and Social Justice Initiative.
Minimum Qualifications:

Education
  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology and three years of professional Civil Engineering experience; or other combinations of education and/or experience which provides preparation to do professional Civil Engineering work.

Experience:
  • Three (3) years of full-time Civil Engineering work.

OR: An equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the position duties.
Though not requirements, strong candidates will have some of the following experience or can describe comparable experience:

  • Three to five years of Civil Engineering experience in the design of bicycle facilities, pedestrian facilities, roadways, drainage infrastructure, and pedestrian signal and lighting improvements related to public works transportation facilities.
  • Knowledge and experience with AutoCAD and Civil3D.
  • Familiarity with the City of Seattle, WSDOT, NACTO, MUTCD, and City/County roadway design standards.
  • Familiarity with WA State DOE, King County Stormwater Manual, or the City of Seattle drainage ordinances and codes/regulations involving stormwater discharges is highly desirable.
  • Ability to effectively work in a multicultural workplace with a diverse customer base.
Other Requirements:
  • Current Washington State driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility A background check may be required for this position.
Work Environment / Physical Demands:
  • Work is typically performed in a hybrid work environment in which a minimum of 2 days of the work is completed in a city office, and 3 days of the work is completed remotely in a regular 40-hour work week.
  • Field assignments may entail exposure to all types of weather, traffic, hazardous/toxic substances, and work in or near construction sites.
  • May be required to lift over 50 pounds.
  • May be required to stand, walk, or bend for extended periods.
  • May be required to work nights, evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
  • Overnight travel may be required.

The full salary range for this position is $46.61 - $54.40 Hourly.
