Movement Innovation Collaborative Co-Director

Remote, Full Time, Executive Position

 

The Movement Innovation Collaborative is currently seeking Co-Directors to lead the organization’s vision and strategic direction and represent the organization to the public and stakeholders. 

 

About Us: 

The Movement Innovation Collaborative, MIC, is a new initiative made possible through a historic $75M philanthropic investment that will deepen and expand the capacity, impact, and sustainability of California’s grassroots movements for racial justice and social transformation. MIC will support changemakers and organizations to catalyze innovations in movement strategy and power building, intergenerational leadership development, and our collective long-term sustainability and resiliency. Through a network of physical and virtual “centers,” MIC will also contribute a key piece of social movement infrastructure needed to fuel transformative structural change across California. This network will consist of new and existing centers serving hundreds of organizations in regional ecosystems and tens of thousands of grassroots leaders in California. 

 

MIC is focusing on three core strategies to deepen the power, coordination, and impact of the sector. In all three areas, we will create program and infrastructure supports that are additive and synergistic with existing movement efforts rather than duplicative.

  • Healing Justice and Sustainable Work Culture

 

What You’ll Be Doing: 

In these initial stages of our development, we are seeking experienced and dynamic Co-Directors to help build and steer our organization from the ground up. The Co-Directors will take the reins in operationalizing the organizational design, crafting and executing strategic plans, supervising financial management, building the staff team, guiding team performance, and coordinating key projects. They will also be pivotal in discerning the power-building infrastructure needs of grassroots movements and aligning MIC's initiatives to meet these needs. This will be the second Co-Director position to be hired. Once both directors are hired, we will clarify roles, responsibilities and a division of labor aligned with the expertise of the two Co-Directors. 

 

Principles of Co-Leadership:

MIC’s approach to co-leadership is informed by this emerging set of principles that will guide the shared commitment of the co-directors to:

  • Support the larger vision of the MIC
  • Be accountable to the grassroots leaders and communities we serve
  • Be accountable to the Board, Leadership Council, and staff team.
  • Tend to the co-leadership relationship and use direct, open & frequent communication
  • Address issues of gender and race openly and frequently
  • Develop a clarity of roles and decision-making authority with an equitable share of external and internal management responsibilities
  • Develop  equitable organizational decision-making processes that are actively collaborative and encourage leadership from the entire team
 

Shared Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership:

  • Co-lead process to provide lead thinking on overall strategy and direction for MIC
  • Hold a long-term view of CA power-building infrastructure needs & MIC’s role in meeting them
  • Ensure the organization's strategic plan is translated into actionable goals for performance and growth
  • Ensure the strategic direction and integration of the overall program strategy
  • Represent MIC externally to partners, funders, conferences, media, etc.

Organizational Development:

  • Oversee the development of the staff team, Board, and Leadership Council to meet the strategic direction
  • Set direction for strategic budgets and development strategy

Fundraising:

  • Raise an additional $20-$50 Million over 10 years
  • Maintain communications and nurture relationships with funders.

Co-Director Lead Responsibilities  (division of labor TBD) :

Organizational Development:

  • Lead organizational development initiatives
  • Oversee the setting up of the new legal entity in collaboration with legal counsel and the Lead Team.
  • Implement and support new governing bodies and structures in consultation with the Lead Team, Implementation Committee, and others.
  • Identify and manage consultants/vendors for key bodies of operational work.

Financial Management:

  • Oversee strategic budget process and financial management
  • Supervise Finance Director

Team Management:

  • Manage the recruitment,  hiring process, and supervision for the Deputy Director
  • Manage the recruitment, hiring process and supervision for the Finance Director, Operations Manager, Development Manager, Program Director & Program Strategies Directors.

Fundraising:

  • Maintain communications and nurture relationships with TCE and other key funders.
  • Oversee proposal development, the management of grants, including writing and reporting.

Program Strategy and Oversight:

  • Oversight and strategic leadership of Network of Centers, Movement Strategy & Innovation, Healing Justice & Sustainable Work Culture program strategies (Program Director is Lead)
  • Oversight of overall program integration 
  • Oversight of Research and Learning (Deputy Director is Lead)
  • Oversight of movement partnerships (similar to the regranting process)


Who You Are: 

While no one person will embody all of the qualities described below, the ideal candidate will possess many of the following professional and personal abilities, attributes, and experiences:

  • A deep commitment to MIC's mission and values.
  • Demonstrated expertise in organizing, with a focus on social transformation and racial justice, with at least seven years of experience in a similar role within a non-profit setting.
  • Proven experience in strategic planning, organizational development, and project management, and the ability to hold a long-term view of power-building infrastructure needs. 
  • Strong financial management skills with the ability to optimize financial resources.
  • Experience in interpreting data and using it to create a compelling narrative that highlights its impact
  • Proven ability to recruit, train, and inspire teams of individuals from a variety of backgrounds, including those of different ages, genders, races, and socioeconomic statuses. 
  • Strong skills in promoting the professional growth and advancement of their team members.
  • Track record of successful fundraising, networking, and grant management experience.
  • Excellent communication skills, able to articulate a vision and strategy in a way that inspires and motivates staff and stakeholders.
  • Ability to navigate complex challenges, make informed decisions, and guide the organization through periods of growth and change.
  • Comfort using digital organizing tools.

 

Benefits:

Employees receive 15 days of vacation, four personal days, 12 sick days per year, and a generous paid family leave policy. We also provide the following at no cost to the employee:

This is a full-time & exempt position that is available immediately. This is a remote role, but the candidate must reside in California. The salary range for this position is $200,000-$220,000. Once established, this position reports directly to the Board; in the meantime, this position will report directly to the Leadership Team.
