As a Molecular Epidemiology Director at the Georgia Department of Public Health, you will join a dedicated group of public health professionals that help support the overall mission and vision of protecting lives of Georgian residents in a variety of ways.

Job Responsibilities



  • Establish goals and a work plan for the new advanced molecular detection (AMD) Epidemiology Section. Contribute to AMD capacity building activities in multiple infectious disease concentrations.
  • Hire and manage the Molecular Epidemiologist II
  • Work closely with AMD laboratorians, bioinformaticians, data scientists, and academic consultants in Georgia to analyze genomic datasets, build reusable bioinformatics pipelines, and run routine analysis pipelines and workflows.
  • Work closely with database developers to build a data management system for AMD data
  • Participate in national AMD Epidemiology meetings and working groups
  • Provide technical, programmatic, and logistical support for funded projects and coordinate activities with grant project.
  • Act as a liaison between developers, bioinformaticians, laboratory, and subject matter experts to provide support and technical guidance.
  • Assist with implementing AMD trainings for public health epidemiologists. Staff should be able to contribute and present content in these trainings.
  • Stay informed on modern, state-of-the-art bioinformatics methodologies and recommendations from federal partners.
  • Receive, interpret, and respond to requests for data from DPH.
  • Maintain existing datasets and corresponding documentation.
  • Assist in developing recommendations for data-driven, evidence-based interventions, policies, and control measures in response to epidemiologic findings.
  • Prepare written reports and presentations that communicate necessary information to staff, the public, and partners.
  • Identify surveillance needs; assist with design, implementation, maintenance, and evaluation of public health surveillance systems.
  • Provide epidemiologic input into epidemiologic studies, public health programs, and community public health planning processes.

Minimum Qualifications

Doctorate degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, Biostatistics or a closely related field AND Two years of experience supervising/leading epidemiologic programs
OR
Master's degree in Public Health or a closely related field AND Three years of experience performing epidemiologic work or work in a closely related field in a supervisory or team lead role
OR
Two years at the lower level or position equivalent with management/supervisory responsibilities.
Preferred Qualifications


  • Experience supervising epidemiologists and epidemiologic programs
  • Strong oral and written communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
  • DrPh, MPH or MSPH, awarded by an Association of Schools of Public Health accredited program, with a concentration in Epidemiology or at least 24 credit hours in epidemiology and biostatistics
  • At least three years of experience performing epidemiologic activities
  • Relevant knowledge of job area indicated by at least 3 graduate-level credit hours or one year of work experience in that area
