We are looking for a Mechanical Designer to support Mechanical Power Conversion (MPC) who is a team player with a high level of initiative and the ability to work in an environment of rapidly changing priorities designing complex aerospace products.

Mechanical Designers at Collins work directly with engineering staff to produce 3-D models and 2-D layout drawings of the product to meet both engineering and customer requirements.  Models and layouts show the complete definition of all components with consideration for manufacture and assembly.  Designers are also responsible for creating and maintaining a complete BOM, using existing components where possible.  The selected candidate must be competent in aspects of engineering drawings depicting mechanical product details, assemblies, and outlines.  Duties will include model creation, view depiction, generation of proper nomenclature, and the application of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).  Ultimately, our Designers have the responsibility to accurately capture the design of the product with detailed models and drawings to support the manufacture of the individual parts and assembly of the product.

This position is Onsite, with Hybrid options as a future possibility.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Create 3-D product models, outlines, and layouts.
  • Create Proposal Envelope Solids in customer preferred formats.
  • Work with engineering for initial 2D concept of product.
  • Create solid model piece parts and housings in NX, support the move towards Model-Based Definition, direct to manufacture.
  • Perform tolerance stack-up analysis to ensure correct fit and alignment.
  • Create assemblies in NX and manage the Bill of Materials.
  • Create Layout, Layout Parts List, and Balloon Sheets.
  • Create dimensioned detail component drawings for high complexity piece parts.
  • Execute Collins Standard Work using Design Standard Features and Design Guidebook as appropriate to complete the task.
  • Investigate and improve, with engineering, current product design issues.
  • Support and participate in engineering design reviews
  • Support Interface with the Structures group to ensure that they have the necessary physical product definition to perform stress and thermal and dynamic analyses as required and as directed by engineering.
  •  Support Casting Vendors to help generate of a casting model that can be produced
  • Work with Collins product definition and engineering support groups and coordinate assistance as required.
  • Lead detailing drafters in the completion of component drawings for a design project.
  • Status team regularly on task performance.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Typically requires a University Degree and minimum 2 years of prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field or in absence of a degree, 6 years of relevant experience
  • Must have or be capable of obtaining a US Department of Defense (DoD) security clearance.  Candidate selected will be subject to a government security investigation/reinstatement and must meet eligibility requirements
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in a design and drafting environment developing mechanical products
  • Understanding of mechanical principles and demonstrated proficiency in reading and interpreting models, assembly, and piece part drawings. 
  • Experience in the application of GD&T for design documentation, along with the tolerance analysis of assembly and piece parts.
  • Experience with Siemens NX and Teamcenter in the design of mechanical products.  The Collins primary toolset of choice is NX, but knowledge of other systems is also beneficial. 
  • A working knowledge of Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) tools and general computer literacy
  • Experience in a manufacturing environment. 
  • Experience in the use of Model Based Definition (MBD) and Additive Manufacturing
  • Ability to perform tolerance stack-up analysis to ensure correct fit and alignment.
