About The Job
The job description summary provides an outline for a mid-level Architectural Historian/Built Environment Specialist that is part of Dudek’s cultural resources team to manage and prepare historic resource evaluations and related technical documents in compliance with CEQA, NEPA, and Section 106 of the NHPA.

Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • Prepare historic resource surveys, evaluations, and related technical documents in compliance with CEQA, NEPA, Section 106 of the NHPA, and applicable local requirements.
  • Evaluate historic resources in consideration of NRHP, CRHR, and local-level designation criteria and integrity requirements.
  • Ability to research, develop, and write historic context statements.
  • Delegate technical work to entry-level staff when appropriate.
  • Conduct, organize, and lead built environment fieldwork efforts: understand the necessary level of effort for the recordation of a variety of built environment resources.
  • Assist in assessing CEQA impacts/Section 106 effects on historical resources/historic properties in consideration of federal, state, and local requirements.
  • Have a working understanding of the Secretary of the Interiors Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties, and understand the application of these Standards in federal, state, and local regulatory settings.
  • Ability to work within report and project budgets, manage a technical report from start to finish, and meet deliverable deadlines.
  • Effectively communicate as a senior team member of the cultural resources group.
Minimum Requirements
  • Master’s degree in History, Architectural History, Historic Preservation, or a related field
  • Meets the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualifications Standards for architectural history.
  • Strong writing and research skills.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Ability to work as part of a team of cultural resources professionals.
  • Familiarity with preparing technical reports for CEQA compliance. 
  • Experience conducting property-specific research, including, but not limited to, building permit research at local government offices and a wide variety of archival facilities.
  • Familiarity with CHRIS records searches.
  • Experience developing historic context statements.
  • Understanding of the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Treatment of Historic Properties.
  • Experience evaluating properties in accordance with local, state, and national criteria and integrity requirements on State of California Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) forms.
  • Familiarity with assessing impacts on historical resources under CEQA and adverse effects on historic properties under Section 106 of the NHPA.
  • Ability to travel for fieldwork.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to contribute to preparing scopes and costs based on project/regulatory compliance needs.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and have active personal automobile liability insurance by first day of employment

Preferred Qualifications
  • Between 3 to 5 years of professional experience in architectural history, historic preservation, and regulatory compliance in California.
  • Understanding Southern California’s regional history and experience with unique regulatory requirements of cities and counties throughout Southern California.

  • This job may occasionally require working with demanding clients (internal and external).
Physical Requirements
  • This job operates in a remote or office-based environment and this role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, printers, etc.
  • Will occasionally require fieldwork that can include workdays over 8 hours long.
  • This job requires occasional project site visits-based outdoors which can include excessive noise, uneven walking surfaces, challenging terrain, extensive walking, extreme weather, moving vehicles and equipment.

  • This job requires working on a computer, sitting or standing for long periods of time in an office or remote office setting.
  • This job requires attending meetings, both in person and virtually as well as speaking on the phone with peers, clients, etc. Speaking, hearing and listening are required.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Proposed Salary Range: $70,000-$95,000 annually *
*Final agreed upon compensation will be based on a variety of factors including but not limited to an individual’s related experience, education, certifications, skills, and work location.
