MICROBIOLOGY SUPERVISOR

Job Description

Serve as Supervisor of the Microbiology Lab and works with Quality Assurance Director to ensure timely and seamless daily operations in the laboratory. Ensures lab personnel have appropriate training and resources to run required analyses. The supervisor is responsible for organizing sample receipts, preparation, analysis and reporting of results. The supervisor is also responsible for answering questions regarding results, testing methodologies, and future tests.

Report directly to president of the company. Works with client services, sales, and administrative personnel. Also works with Quality Assurance Director and Quality Team to ensure all data generated is accurate and in compliance with GMP and GLP, ISO 17025 guidelines, and company quality system requirements.

Responsibilities

· Manage daily lab operations and serve as main point of contact for the Microbiology lab.

· Manage Microbiology laboratory staff including training, scheduling, day-to-day workflow, and any personnel issues. Ensure weekly workflow and weekend shifts are appropriately staffed.

· Perform day to day sample processing duties and delegate duties to other department employees; sample set up, data analysis, and data review to adhere to expected sample turnaround times and project timelines.

· Assists in the scheduling of routine and non-routine sample pickups.

· Analyze, review, and authorize results for test reports generated by the department.

· Send test reports to clients and file reports appropriately, as needed.

· Organize and carry-out method verification, validation, or other bench-related projects.

· Work with client services to address and resolve any client complaints, issues, and inquiries.

· Generate pricing and verification procedures necessary to offer new testing methods to fulfill client’s needs.

· Reviews lab documentation on a regular basis and files documentation appropriately.

· Perform employee reviews annually.

Quality Initiatives

· Assist with writing and updating all department documents, training records and files, and method and equipment validations.

· Reviews and updates all laboratory documents, ensures all internal SOPs are up to date with current revisions of reference methods.

· Ensure all employees are wearing proper personal protective equipment and following all safety measures while working in the laboratory.

· Assist QA with implementing principles and requirements of ISO 17025.

· Work with QA to generate schedule of third-party Proficiency Tests, ensuring all scope methods are covered at an appropriate frequency.

· Assist with performing preventative maintenance, monthly, quarterly and annual tests, and calibration of thermometers, micropipettes, and other equipment.

· Initiate and assist in completion of corrective action plans as a result of internal and external audits, and any issues found in daily sample processing.

· Work with the Quality Assurance department to ensure quality analytical results are being reported.

· Work to ensure the department provides a clean and safe working environment to staff and visitors.

Knowledge, Skills, and abilities required:

  • Degree in Microbiology (or related) and at least 3 years of experience in a closely related field.
  • Robust understanding and application of microbiological principles and available technology in the analysis of a wide variety of test samples.
  • Strong customer service skills necessary to address client inquiries.
  • Strong communication skills to lead team objectives.
  • Good interpersonal skills to be effective as part of a team.
  • Experience in aseptic technique.
  • Ability to successfully pass a criminal background check.
