Background
- Works under direction of microbiology supervisor.
- Conducts microbiological assays and performs routine environmental monitoring.
Tasks
- Conduct testing such as pour plate, membrane filtration, swab testing, water testing, enumeration of organisms, growth promotion testing, and routine environmental monitoring.
- Conduct organism identification as needed.
- Create purchase orders and order supplies as needed.
- Trend data efficiently
- Calibrate instruments and perform instrument qualifications as required.
- Log equipment temperature readings daily.
- Open investigations, as necessary
- Complete change controls for document issues.
- Gram stains and provide morphological characteristics.
- Interface with other departments daily to answer questions or communicate sample status.
- Perform other related duties as assigned to meet departmental and company objectives.
Specifications
- Bachelor’s degree in microbiology, biology or related science; or equivalent combination of bachelor’s degree and pertinent, progressive experience in pharmaceutical or other highly related industry.
- Two years of experience in a microbiology laboratory; or associate degree in microbiology, biology, of related science. Also, five years of pertinent and progressive experience in pharmaceutical or other highly regulated industry.
Ability to:
- Stand, walk, sit, balance, stoop or crouch, kneel, reach, push, grasp, feel, talk, and hear.
- Have clarity of vision at 20 feet or more and 20 inches or less with the ability to judge distance and space relationships.
- Bring objects into sharp focus and look up and down or to the right and left, while fixed on a point.
- Identify and distinguish colors
- Exert an amount of force continuously and/or up to 5 pounds of force frequently; and/or up to 25 pounds of force occasionally to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
- Move mechanical parts and comfortable with exposure to chemicals and biological organisms.
- Wear respiratory devices that include but are not limited to: (APR) air purifying respirators, which include half-face and full-face negative pressure respirators.
Skill In:
- Good working knowledge of aseptic technique
- Method reading skills
- Use of microbiological testing equipment
- PC proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite
- Good communication skills
- A general understanding of the USP chapters, (61, 62, and 1117)
