Advanced Practice Manager - Nursing Intensive Care NICU

Serving as the manager of the APP team, this position is responsible for the selection, training, oversight, and ongoing education and development of APP team members. Partners with administrative and physician leaders to foster shared accountability for care team engagement, patient experience, quality, as well as financial performance and overall success of the practice/department.

The world-class, 51-bed, Level III, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit admits nearly 1,000 infants and performs nearly 300 critical care neonatal transports each year and is the largest NICU in northern New England.  The dynamic interdisciplinary professional healthcare team is dedicated to delivering the highest quality care for all newborns, ranging from healthy neonates to sick or premature newborns requiring close observation or intensive care.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

  1. Current Physician Assistant license issued in the State of Maine, or Licensure by the State of      Maine as a Nurse Practitioner.
  2. Five years clinical experience as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant strongly preferred
  3. Must have basic understanding of leadership and management principles, good communication and problem solving skills. Prior management experience is desirable.
  4. Skill in time management, problem solving, crisis intervention, multitasking and handling complex organizational matters.
  5. Excellent communication, interpersonal and customer service skills with the ability to establish/maintain effective working relationships with patients, clinical staff and colleagues.
  6. Minimum 3 years progressive leadership experience.

Essential Functions

  • Provides direct care in the designated clinical specialty area
  • Provides direct administrative supervision of all staff APPs in the designated program
    • Responsible for providing ongoing clinical and professional oversight of direct reports
    • Coordination and oversight of APP clinical schedules
    • Supervises APP staff orientation and training as required, including the provision of ongoing coaching and feedback
    • Coordinates the interviewing and hiring of staff APPs
    • Completes all performance evaluations and reviews, including FPPE/OPPE, for staff APPs
    • Plans and facilitates department APP team meetings
    • Participates in department physician interviews/candidate selection with participation in physician onboarding
  • Quality Management
    • Facilitates development of clinical protocols, policies, and procedures in conjunction with department leadership
  • Oversees APP Program budget development and maintenance
    • Participates in budget process/evaluations with administrative leadership
  • Develops goals and objectives for program
    • Collaborates with physician leadership and staff to develop annual goals for the department
  • Serves on Departmental and Medical Group committees
    • Actively participates in practice, MHMG, COE, and hospital committees as needed
    • Participates in APP advisory council as appropriate, with guidance from COE Director
  • Leadership Development
    • Engages in professional growth opportunities/courses to develop and expand leadership skills
  • Promotes a Culture of Safety
    • Identifies risks and hazards to patients and document mitigation efforts (i.e. monitoring safety events and completing action items, RCAs, and intensive reviews).
