JOB SUMMARY
The Meter Reader reads water meters in order to record consumption so that billing can have an accurate amount to charge to customers. This is accomplished by reading meters, answering questions from customers, maintaining meters and automated meter reading devices.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
· Conducts reading and re-reading of meters by operating handheld reading devices, exposing buried meters, reading and recording meter usage accurately, responding to request to repeat readings, testing for leaks, and re-reading meters
· Provides customer service by answering questions, explaining how to read meters, rereading meters if needed, notifying customers of leaks, and connecting and disconnecting meters
· Checks for addresses with zero consumption by testing meters, verifying readings, checking hoses, and changing meters
· Maintains meters and automated meter reading devices by replacing broken meter, repairing waters leaks by meters, repairing and/or replacing broken meter parts, installing and/or repairing automated meter reading devices, and raising and/or lowering meter boxes
· Accepts, receives, and/or collects payments
· Performs inventory/property management
· Maintains vehicles by checking fluids daily, stocking vehicles with equipment and supplies, and reporting maintenance or repairs
· Reconnects water supply by reconnecting service
OTHER DUTIES MAY INCLUDE
Maintaining vehicle and tools; inspecting meters for water leaks; changing out meters, completing work orders, and assisting with water cutoffs and reconnects.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Requires a High School Diploma.
CERTIFICATION, LICENSE AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Requires a Class “D” Water License within six-months of hire.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
· Knowledge of departmental practices and systems.
· Skilled in the use small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems.
· Skilled in using computers for data entry.
· Skilled in using computers for word processing and/or accounting purposes.
· Ability to maintain a professional demeanor and an orientation towards customer service.
· Ability to organize, and communicate effectively.
· Ability to use or repair small/light equipment, such as power tools.
· Ability to use or repair medium equipment and machinery, such as vehicles or commercial mowers.
· Ability to maintain constructive and cooperative working relationships with others.
· Ability to cooperate with fellow employees as a team member.
ALTERNATIVE WORK SCHEDULES
This position is eligible for flexible hours and 4 10-hour days scheduling upon the successful completion of a six month probationary period and at supervisor’s discretion.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $16.96 - $24.59 per hour
