PEER OUTREACH SPECIALIST - Galveston County Clubhouse
LOCATION: Galveston County Clubhouse. 2200 Market Street, Suite 750. Galveston, TX 77550
ACCOUNTABLE TO: Executive Director of the Galveston County Clubhouse
RESPONSIBLE FOR: Community outreach efforts
ABOUT CLUBHOUSE
Clubhouse is an evidence-based model for Mental Health recovery where members engage in meaningful work within a community of peers, overcoming the symptoms and stigma of mental illness while supporting the daily operations of the organization.
Based on the belief that everyone can recover and lead a full, productive, and meaningful life, Clubhouse members share ownership and responsibility for the success of the organization. Working and socializing in a unique partnership with a small staff, we focus on strengths over illness. Skills acquired or enhanced while working at the Clubhouse can be readily applied to a variety of outside paid work and educational environments.
ABOUT THE JOB
As a Peer Outreach Specialist for Galveston County Clubhouse, you'll be responsible for engaging individuals one-on-one and in community settings, directed towards membership and participation in the Clubhouse work-ordered day and services.
Working with the Director, you will identify existing community services with which to partner in providing on-site Peer Support, including emotional and material support, peer advocacy, resource navigation, and the facilitation of recovery-oriented groups. Throughout, you will act as an ambassador for the Galveston County Clubhouse, inviting individuals to join regular community planning meetings leading up to the official opening of the clubhouse.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Engage with individuals in various community settings, offering your experience as a peer to support others in one-on-one interactions and group discussions, alongside partner programming
- Facilitate groups of 8 to 12 in which individuals help each other identify personal strengths, interests, social relationships, hopes for the future, and sources of well-being, as well as learn new knowledge and skills that can support their recovery journey
- Coordinate meetings of interested individuals in planning the opening of a clubhouse in Galveston County, engaging in discussions about the clubhouse as well as decisions regarding opportunities and programming
- Support individuals in finding other community opportunities, resources, and destinations that match their own interests and hopes for the future
- Support individuals in becoming more comfortable with self-advocacy
- Support individuals in building personal skills and confidence through telling your own stories of recovering and moving forward in life
- Serve as a role model who shares personal strengths and skills as well as the message that recovery is possible
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Experience in working with a diverse and constantly changing population, including the ability to inspire action and growth within individuals overcoming the symptoms and stigma of mental illnesses
Be comfortable:
- facilitating groups (some group facilitation experience is highly desirable)
- learning about community opportunities, resources, and destinations
- using your own life experience to help others ? especially your experience in recovery and ability to self-advocate
- accessing low-cost transportation and supporting others in using these resources
Experience with de-escalation and crisis management, and the ability to handle situations with compassion, confidence, and care for our members and the larger community
Be flexible and open to multiple, personally chosen pathways forward in recovery and living in the community (comfortable knowing that no one way forward in recovery and community living fits everyone)
Be willing to share personal life experience and use their experience to motivate, comfort, and inspire others
A high level of energy and commitment
Willingness to learn new software and technology
Acceptance of flexible working hours
EDUCATION & CREDENTIALS
- Mental Health Peer Specialist (MHPS) certification OR
- Obtain certification within six months (Galveston County Clubhouse will consider reimbursement for obtaining this certification, after it has been achieved)
- Personal lived experience overcoming a significant life disruption due to a Mental Health condition. Must be at least 2 years recovered from this condition.
- Possession of a valid Driver License and clean driving record
- Ability to pass a criminal background check and random drug screens
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
- Full-time permanent position
- $17.50 - $19.23 per hour ($36,400 - $40,000 annually) - your pay rate is based on experience doing the same/similar role
