Description

The Mental Health Peer Specialist (MHPS) provides encouragement, hope, assistance, guidance, and understanding to support individuals in their recovery journey. The MHPS will provide direct and indirect support to adults with Mental Health challenges. Depending on the lived experience of the MHPS, this position may also work with those that may be struggling with recovery from substance use. The MHPS will provide peer support services, role model competency in recovery and ongoing coping skills. Services may be both individual and group at an outpatient clinic, in the community, or in individual's homes. The MHPS will have personal lived experienced navigating behavioral health systems and draw upon this to inspire hope and model relationships built on respect, trust, and validation. By sharing their own lived experience, the MHPS will help adults to enhance wellness, create strategies for self-empowerment, and take concrete steps towards building fulfilling, self-determined lives for themselves. Walking alongside the adults on their journey, the MHPS is an ally and advocate. The MHPS is not a clinician, but will work alongside, complement, and enhance the work of the clinical team. Works under moderate supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.Must be familiar with and/or willing to be trained in trauma-informed care. This includes understanding, recognizing, and responding to the effects of all types of trauma, and an ability to work in a behavioral environment where staff convey dignity, respect, hopefulness, and the opportunity for choice and empowerment among consumers.

Qualifications

Education: High School Diploma or GED

Certification:Must be able to obtain MH Peer Specialist Certification within6 months of employment. Prefer an individual with lived experience that will also be able to obtain Recovery Peer Specialist Certification.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

Must be able to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, squat, lift 25 pounds, walk over various terrains, sit for an extended period, and reach overhead.
