Job description

Under the direction of the Mental Health Program Supervisor, this Mental Health Clinician will be a member of the crisis team and will provide specific services to inmates at the Ottawa County Adult Detention Center (County Jail), including assessments, brief therapy, assessments of SUD and Mental Health disorders, and case management activities to link and coordinate services upon discharge.
This is a full-time, benefited position working and based at the Ottawa County Jail at the Fillmore Complex in West Olive, MI. The position will work Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. This position is part of the crisis team's on-call rotation, for which extra compensation is offered and typically consists of between 2-4 12 hour shifts per month.

The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Provides consistently high quality crisis assessments across all populations, and arranges for appropriate dispositions and follow through.
  2. Arrives at accurate diagnoses based upon available information.
  3. Completes appropriate documentation in accordance with agency and external standards.
  4. Performs liaison duties with jails to assure high quality Mental Health treatment for CMHOC consumers.
  5. Actively participates in all department, team, staff, or other meetings.
  6. Provides high quality, goal oriented, short term, and crisis oriented therapy and case management.
  7. Consistently maintains billable activity within the expected range.
  8. Responds to emergency requests within established time parameters.
  9. Provides critical incident stress debriefing as requested.
  10. Provides training as requested.
  11. Provides professional oversight for crisis residential consumers.
  12. Provides clinical consultation to the Ottawa County Help line during regular business hours.
  13. Helps support an equitable, safe, diverse and inclusive workplace.
  14. Provides crisis stabilization services.
  15. Other duties as assigned.

Note: The crisis team clinician assigned to the jail will provide jail specific services including both Mental Health and substance use disorder assessment, referral and case management, as well as brief therapy.

Master's degree in social work, psychology, or a related Mental Health field is required. Two years of relevant professional experience in a Mental Health agency preferred. Lived experiences with mental illness, developmental disabilities, or substance use disorders are valued.
Licenses and Certifications:
Must possess or obtain State of Michigan licensure as a Licensed Master's Social Worker, Limited Licensed Master's Social Worker, Licensed Psychologist, or Limited Licensed Psychologist. Certified Advanced Addictions Counselor status also preferred.
Possession of a valid Michigan driver's license is required.Required Knowledge and Skills:
  1. Thorough working knowledge and use of crisis intervention and related skills.
  2. Working knowledge of Michigan Department of Community Health and CMH rules, regulations, and standards.
  3. Thorough knowledge of statutory and regulatory requirements governing the confidentiality of patient health information, including the provisions of HIPAA.
  4. Thorough working knowledge of professional and ethical practice standards
  5. Thorough working knowledge of the DSM-V.
  6. Thorough working knowledge of varied therapeutic short-term interventions.
  7. Flexibility in the selection of appropriate interventions for each consumer.
  8. Good working knowledge of the probate court system, including processes and procedures for involuntary hospitalization.
  9. Capacity to work effectively within agency parameters.
  10. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  11. Computer word processing skills sufficient to produce timely clinical notes.
  12. Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
  13. Shows willingness to learn and use new skills and takes regular advantage of training and staff development opportunities and resources.
  14. Demonstrates abilities to link an individual to appropriate resources.
  15. Thorough working knowledge of proper medical record documentation and management.
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodations, including, but not limited to, visual and/or audiological appliances and devices to increase mobility.
Working Conditions:
Services primarily are provided in the Ottawa County Jail, other community settings, and some office-based work.
