Mental Health Clinical Practitioner

About Us: Established in 1987, and integrated into Heartland Alliance International in 2012, the Marjorie Kovler Center (Kovler Center) is a national leader in the provision of Mental Health and psychosocial support services. The Kovler Center Child Trauma Program (CTP) is a Category III Center with the National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN). CTP provides direct clinical and case management services to immigrant and refugee youth and families aged 0-21 years old from diverse backgrounds. These services are evidence-based and culturally adapted to the population served. Services are provided via telehealth or in-person, either in the community, schools, or at the Kovler Center, depending on the needs of the youth and family. This center is focused on providing high quality, culturally and linguistically responsive, trauma-informed clinical services and interventions to best meet the needs of families from over 25 countries who have been impacted by war, forced migration, resettlement, family separation, and/or torture.

Summary: The Mental Health Clinical Practitioner at the Kovler Center Child Trauma Program will provide trauma-informed individual and group therapy to best meet the needs of immigrant and refugee youth and families who have been impacted by war, forced migration, resettlement, family separation, and/or torture. Individual accountabilities and work volume will be established through the development of annual Success Objectives within the framework outlined below. This position will be 100% FTE. Spanish language proficiency strongly preferred.

This position is governed by a Collective Bargaining Agreement for which the employee, as a condition of employment, shall be required to remit dues or fees to the Union for administration of the contract.

Essential Functions:

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provides high quality, culturally and linguistically responsive, trauma-informed clinical services and interventions to best meet the needs of immigrant and refugee youth and families. This includes conducting screening, assessment, trauma-informed individual therapy, and group therapies. Clinical services will take place virtually, at the Kovler Center, in the community, and/or home settings.
  • Receives case assignments and establishes and implements client treatment plans to ensure that realistic goals and deadlines are met in conjunction with clinical supervisor. Will write assessment reports and notes and psychological affidavits as needed.
  • Develops and engages in professional relationships with social service, health, legal, and other governmental providers and agencies.
  • Participates in regular supervision meetings, team meetings, and in-house trainings.
  • Provides advocacy, crisis intervention, and social support services and referrals when needed.
  • Participates in local and national immigrant and refugee serving coalitions and workgroups.
  • May present and train on immigrant and refugee trauma and child trauma across multi-disciplinary settings and with community partners. This also may include outreach for developing referral bases.

Education and Experience:

  • A minimum of a Master’s degree (M.A./M.S.) in social work, psychology, clinical counseling, or related human service equivalent;
  • Experience working with youth and families who have experienced complex trauma, preferably with a refugee and immigrant population;
  • Spanish bilingual strongly preferred. Secondary preferred languages include Ukrainian or French.

Certifications/Licenses:

  • Full licensure to practice (LCSW, LCPC or Clinical Psychologist) preferred, but not required

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (K/S/A):

  • Ability to work with people of varying socioeconomic, cultural, linguistic, and religious backgrounds.
  • Ability to recognize implicit bias, engage in self-reflection, and abide by principles of anti-racism.
  • Strong time management skills; ability to prioritize effectively and perform all administrative tasks on time.
  • Excellent communication skills. Strong networker, convener, relationship builder and communicator with experience collaborating with diverse work teams and stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle confidential and sensitive information possessing skills to handle situations in a professional and diplomatic manner.
  • A high degree of collaboration and emotional intelligence, self-motivation, and analytical ability.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Internet Explorer, Outlook/Exchange; Windows operating systems; and other software routinely used by Heartland Alliance.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to work independently and remain self-motivated with minimal direct supervision.
  • Strategic thought partnership and consultancy skills.

Work Arrangement:

This role is eligible for a “hybrid” work arrangement. If hybrid, it is expected this person would be able to meet for “in person” meetings when needed or at the request of others. In-person meetings may be required on a regular basis (weekly, monthly, etc.). There may also be the availability to work from home when appropriate.
