The Memory Care Assistant’s primary responsibility is to work within the Memory Care program for adults with the onset of mild memory loss. This role works with and reports to the Programs Manager assisting seniors with activities, education, reminders for ADLs, and exercise. The Memory Care assistant will reach out to seniors and/or their families when the senior has been absent from ISC to identify any barriers that are resulting in the senior’s absence. The Memory Care assistant will work collaboratively with the Programs Manager to assess the needs of the senior. The Memory Care assistant will participate in weekly outreach to promote the Memory Care program.
Skills & Abilities:
The ability to speak fluent English is required, speaking additional languages will be beneficial.
Excellent oral and written communication skills. The ability to communicate clearly and concisely with multi-cultural staff and seniors.
Daily documentation, weekly reporting to the families, and monthly reporting to ISC. Excellent interpersonal, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills.
Have the physical and emotional capacity while responding to a seniors’ needs, both physical and emotional.
Be physically able to assist with toileting and/or transferring if needed.
Have the emotional intelligence and compassion to work with a variety of seniors.
Provide companionship and behavior management as needed.
Must possess strong organizational skills, cultural sensitivity, and provide follow-up as needed.
Strong administrative skills including attention to detail, the ability to meet deadlines, prioritize tasks, and advanced skills in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
Key Responsibilities:
Prevent wandering, individuals with mild memory loss are prone to wandering, it’s imperative that you ensure they get from place to place safely.
Routine: assist seniors with scheduled activities and interactions. Encourage the seniors to participate in activities designed to keep them physically and mentally active.
Manage behaviors. Seniors with mild memory loss may experience agitation or aggression. The Memory Care assistant must be able to identify and manage the behavior patiently while assisting the senior return to a calm state.
Assure safety. A senior with mild memory loss may unknowingly put themselves in danger, the Memory Care assistant must be ready to help prevent falls, the ingestion of harmful chemicals or objects, and have the senior within their line of sight. Report any concerns or observations to the Program Manager in a timely manner.
Research and trends: It’s important for the Memory Care program to remain up to date on mild memory loss and related concerns. The Memory Care assistant will participate in research, trainings, and knowledge of community events.
Resources: The Memory Care assistant will provide the senior and their families with community resources, information pertaining to memory loss, and encourage the family members to participate in the senior’s care.
Administrative: Assist in the planning and coordination of the activity calendar. Prepare and submit reports and charting.
Preparation: Assure the Room of Colors is ready for all activities and experiences the seniors will engage in, organize, and prepare the room for the following day.
General Support: other duties as assigned.
