Description
Under supervision, to transcribe a wide range and variety of medical reports and documents from dictation equipment on a production typing basis.

Typical Tasks
- Transcribes from dictation equipment highly technical physician-dictated reports and material from a wide variety of specialties;
- Edits dictated material for grammar, punctuation, medical consistency and medical accuracy;
- Communicates with medical staff requesting incomplete or missing information;
- Checks with medical staff when dictated result is not consistent with procedure performed or diagnosis given;
- Works with resident and attending physicians and understands the legal limitations related to result reports and physicians sign-off;
- Investigates all questionable dictations;
- Prepares a variety of normal templates to expedite dictation;
- Maintains logs of transcribed reports;
- Coordinates distribution of transcribed reports to designated persons or offices;
- May assist in developing current resources material for the medical transcription section by noting, researching, and documenting new and unusual terms, pharmaceuticals, instruments, techniques, or other elements;
- Performs other related duties as required.
Employment Standards
Sufficient education, training, and experience to enable a candidate to demonstrate the following qualifications:
Experience Note: A candidate would normally acquire the qualifications listed below through training and experience equivalent to the following:
Completion of courses in medical terminology, anatomy and physiology and at least one year of experience as transcriptionist in a medical setting;
-OR-
Two years of transcription experience in a variety of medical specialty settings.
Knowledge of:
- Comprehensive medical and disease terminology;
- The technical terminology of operative techniques, procedures, and instruments;
- Pharmaceutical terminology;
- Pharmaceuticals, supplies, techniques and measurements that must be included in results for particular diagnostic procedures;
- MediCare Reimbursement policies as they relate to the transcribed result report and patient symptoms and diagnosis;
- The basic organization of a teaching hospital and familiarity with the more complex and innovative procedures characteristic of a teaching hospital;
- Acceptable written and oral communication skills, including English usage, style, grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
- Type at 75 net WPM;
- Operate modern dictation equipment and word processing software;
- Work harmoniously with others under the pressure of demanding production standards and frequent stat report requirements;
- Interpret ambivalent sounding technical terms from the content of the material being transcribed;
- Edit material for correct English and clarification of the medical content;
- Identify and resolve dictation errors, working directly with the physician when necessary;
- Solve problems and work independently with minimal supervision;
- Transcribe accurately from diverse accents and dialects and varying dictation styles;
- Learn and adhere to department and SCVH&HS wide compliance plan and applicable State and Federal guidelines;
- Exercise good judgment in re-ordering priorities when all reports cannot be completed on a shift.
Benefit and Retirement information may vary from bargaining unit to bargaining unit. Due to changes in State Law, current pension provisions described in the union contracts are not automatically applied. Specific pension benefits for new hires who start on or after January 1, 2013 may be different than indicated in the union contracts.
