Description
The Technologist performs various routine chemical, microscopic, and bacteriologic laboratory tests in accordance with laboratory policies. Advanced technical skills are required for various phases of specimen collection, handling, and preparation for testing. Frequent interaction with patients, family members, and various healthcare providers mandates professionalism at all times.
- Knowledge of and complies with applicable federal and state laws.
- Complies with mandatory regulatory and credentialing requirements and participants in continuous improvement activities as assigned in an effort to ensure health care service quality.
- Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
- Perform venipunctures on patients in an efficient, professional, and courteous manner in accordance with laboratory policy.
- Preparation of send-out specimens for reference laboratory testing in accordance to specific reference laboratory policy.
- Perform testing and report results as ordered by physicians in an efficient and knowledgeable manner in accordance with specific laboratory policy.
- Preparation and maintenance of laboratory reagents and supplies in accordance with manufacturer guidelines.
- Compile records pertaining to test results, quality control, specimen referral, daily work sheets and specimen logs in an orderly manner.
- Identify, document, and notify Supervisory Staff of all system deviations form the laboratory's performance specifications.
- Maintain quality of equipment and instruments by adhering to manufacturer recommendations regarding maintenance and operation of laboratory instrumentation. Follow up of instrumentation needing repair by manufacturer, as well as documentation of service is included in this.
- Participate in Quality Assessment and Performance Improvement activities and monitoring in accordance to laboratory policy.
- Maintain current license issued by the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners.
- Maintain a clean, safe environment for processing lab procedures in accordance to lab policy.
- Maintain records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples.
- Maintain records that demonstrate that proficiency testing was performed and submitted in accordance to Proficiency Testing Agency Standards.
- Perform only those tests authorized and approved by the Laboratory Director.
- Completion of other assigned tasks as deemed necessary.
Requirements
- BS from an accredited medical technology program and/or equivalent education for MT licensure.
- MT, ASCP, or equivalent
- Clinical Laboratory Scientist - Generalist license issued by LSBME
- Meditech experience preferred but not required
- Must be able to take On Call
