Performs technical laboratory functions including Chemistry, Hematology, Urinalysis, Immunology and Microbiology testing. Receives and processes specimens, examines specimens and records test results. Analyzes results using knowledge of test principles and clinical significance. Analyzes test quality per established performance standards. Provides test result information to approved callers and alerts appropriate personnel to abnormal test results for immediate action.
- Instructs or educates on specimen collection.
- Obtains specimens for culture and analysis including blood specimens by venipuncture and capillary puncture.
- Labels, dates and records specimens obtained, and distributes to appropriate laboratory areas for analysis and interpretation. Evaluates specimen suitability. Cleans, sterilizes equipment, instruments and work area following safety, cleanliness and infection control procedures. Maintains, orders and restocks as necessary.
- Complies with established laboratory and hospital policies for universal precautions and safety procedures.
- Performs accurate and appropriate testing of specimens received in the laboratory, according to established laboratory protocol and procedures. Records and reports tests in a timely manner according to established laboratory protocol and procedures. Transmits results of critical values, stats and timed tests to appropriate personnel in a timely manner. Verifies results of all tests before reporting. Performs quality control testing according to established procedures including when testing survey samples; Takes appropriate action when results are outside the expected range including reporting discrepancies to appropriate personnel.
- Performs daily, weekly, monthly or as needed, maintenance on instruments and equipment as appropriate. Performs calibration of equipment as required.
- Demonstrates technical proficiency by completing competencies, annual quizzes and successfully processing and reporting of CAP survey samples or other unknowns within defined timelines.
- Serves as a Laboratory Department Lead: Includes, but is not limited to, review of reported results, organizing department workflow, establishing department priorities.
- Performs other duties consistent with purpose of job as directed.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS AND CORE COMPETENCIES
Education: Minimum of Bachelor's Degree required.
Licensure: Certification, by a nationally recognized professional registry, within 1 year of employment is preferred
Experience: Clinical laboratory internship. Two years of clinical experience is preferred.
Other Job Requirements:
Computer skills.
Ability to exercise independent judgement, decision-making and discretion in reporting and distributing results.
