The Medical Records Specialist is responsible for providing support for the Release of Information (ROI) requests for patient Medical Records. Pay range for this position is $15.45-18.47 per hour, based on years of experience.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
- Determine records to be released by reviewing requestors' information in accordance with the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) guidelines and obtaining pertinent patient data from various sources, including electronic, off-site, or physical records that match the request.
- Respond and process requests from physicians offices on a priority basis and fax information to the physician office.
- Respond to phone calls from medical support personnel requesting Medical Records or patient identification to be read from record.
- Log Medical Records request into the electronic medical record, EPIC.
- Comply with all industry regulations and UNLV Health Policies.
- Responsible for handling and recording payments for request.
- Escalate issues to the manager that delay timely release of records.
- Maintain and protect sensitive and private information by keeping patient records confidential in accordance with clinic, hospital, HIPAA, local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- High School Diploma or equivalency
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bilingual-Engllish/Spanish required
- Previous experience with the release of information in the Medical Records field required
- Demonstrated proficiency using computer applications. Use of an electronic medical record system, EPIC experience preferred. Six months or more experience entering data into computer systems. At least 6 months health care work experience
- Experience using the internet required
- Strong verbal communication skills; demonstrated success responding to customer inquiries
- Demonstrated success working in an environment that requires attention to details
- Proven track record of dependability/reliability
- Knowledge of medical terminology is preferred
- Knowledge of HIPAA regulations is preferred
- Ability to type 35 wpm
- Excellent time management and organizational skills
