What will you do?
The State Medical Examiner’s Office is the sole provider of forensic pathology services throughout Oregon. Our team closely collaborates with the county medical examiners and medical legal death investigators employed by each county’s death investigation program, providing technical supervision of all medicolegal death investigations.
State Medical Examiners are stationed in the Portland metro area (Clackamas), Eugene area, and Central Point, Oregon. Forensic pathologists at the State Medical Examiner’s Clackamas location currently perform all medical legal autopsies for Northwestern, Eastern, and Central Oregon.
All records pertaining to the investigation deaths under medical examiner jurisdiction are kept by the Medical Examiner Division, including investigative reports, autopsy reports, toxicology reports. State Medical Examiner staff also provide educational services to investigators and physicians at the county level via monthly in-services, a week-long death investigation course provided once per year, and direct supervision of rotating medical students and resident physicians.
This position is responsible for providing support to all morgue functions, which includes: providing technical support to state forensic pathologists in preparing for and conducting medicolegal autopsies, all receiving and releasing of human remains to funeral homes or investigators, maintaining proper chain of custody over property and its associated paperwork, morgue equipment and maintenance coordination, and other related duties. This position will clean morgue and autopsy suite work areas as needed and is responsible for the organization and stocking of morgue equipment and supplies.
Hours for this position will be mostly during the day and may include weekend days. Hours may change to meet the work demand for the early evening hours. This position may involve occasional overnight travel.
You must be able to provide credible sworn testimony in a criminal or civil proceeding arising from the performance of duties. This includes cogently, accurately, and appropriately qualifying and explaining any results, conclusions, and opinions so their significance is understood.

Minimum Qualifications (these must be addressed in your resume for full consideration):
A Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biology, or Microbiology;
OR
Two years of Medical Laboratory Technician 1 level experience preparing reagents, testing media and stains, performing standardized laboratory tests, examinations and occasionally assisting in more complex, specialized testing procedures; AND
One year of "technical trainee" experience as a Laboratory Assistant in a clinical laboratory;
OR
Completion of a certified clinical laboratory training program;
OR
A Certificate or Associate’s degree in an Applied Science from an accredited Medical or Clinical Laboratory Technician training program.
Note: If you are selected to move forward in the selection process, you must provide official transcripts from all institutions of higher education that were used in the award of your degree.
Preferred Skills (these must be addressed in your cover letter for full consideration):
  • Experience and proficiency in autopsy assistant practices, including obtaining biological specimens, performing eviscerations and complex dissection.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing with diverse groups of people, to include funeral homes, other law enforcement agencies, medical offices/labs, grieving families and other external partners.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience following standard safety precautions including the correct use of PPE.
  • Experience tracking biological specimen inventories, supply inventories, and maintenance procedures using spreadsheets and databases.
  • Experience handling biohazardous specimens including proper documentation and chain of custody procedures.
  • Demonstrated competency using Microsoft Office applications for word processing, spreadsheets, and databases as well as online records management software.
