The Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or Technician (MLT) functions as a professional who assumes responsibility and accountability for the performance of clinical laboratory testing that pertains to patient care and diagnosis. This position performs routine and special laboratory procedures, quality control, preventative maintenance, minor equipment repairs, inventory control, and statistical compilation. Will additionally participate in quality assurance, performance improvement, laboratory education, new employee training and proficiency testing when assigned.

Responsibilities
- Promotes professionalism and interacts with colleagues in a way that promotes a cooperative working environment.
- Displays technical expertise necessary to ensure timely and accurate results of laboratory procedures.
- Ensure specimens are obtained and processed in accordance with laboratory guidelines.
- Demonstrate proper communication skills to relate pertinent data or information about the patient or laboratory sample to appropriate care provider.
- Supports organizational priorities to maintain compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards.
- Attains required competency and demonstrates the ability to follow procedural directions and protocols.
- Exhibits problem-solving skills to troubleshoot and evaluate critical laboratory results.
- Participates in the training/mentoring of new employees, students or interns including lectures and bench techniques.
- Able to prioritize and organize workload and assist other coworkers to maintain productivity.
- Demonstrates proper infection control practices, proper patient identification, performs proper prompt specimen transport.
- Responsible for other duties as assigned.
- Engages in self-evaluation of practice and takes action to improve knowledge and skills.
- Promotes consensus building and applies techniques of conflict resolution and conduct improvement.
- Retains accountability for quality of care given to the patient.
- Promotes service excellence and growth of the laboratory.
Qualifications
Education:
- Baccalaureate Degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a chemical, physical or biological science OR Associates degree in Medical Laboratory Technician studies, or a chemical, physical or biological science associates degree.
- Current knowledge of clinical laboratory techniques and principles
Certification:
- ASCP or equivalent preferred. Certification within a specific area, i.e. M(ASCP), H(ASCP), C(ASCP) qualifies.
Experience:
- Previous clinical laboratory experience as a Medical Laboratory Technician, Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Scientist or Medical Laboratory Scientist within a clinical laboratory highly preferred.
