Medical Interpreter Coordinator

BASIC FUNCTION:
The Medical Interpreter Coordinator will play a crucial role in facilitating communication between healthcare providers and patients with limited English proficiency. The Medical Interpreter Coordinator will serve as the coordinator of Grand River’s team of interpreters (both qualified and certified) by responding to requests by departments in need of interpreters for their patient appointments. When a suitable interpreter is not available, the Medical Interpreter Coordinator will fulfill the requested need.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Coordinates interpreter schedules and functions within the Hospital & Clinics
• Conducts medical and general interpreting for staff, patients, and their families.
• Support, mentor and train new interpreters
• Serves as a conduit for accurate communication interpreting a wide range of medical information that includes medical conditions, treatment options, follow-up appointment details, billing, and insurance in a variety of situations in the healthcare system.
• Advises medical personnel on cultural issues that may impact patient care.
• Ensures accuracy providing clarification when necessary.
• Records and monitors interpretation activities according to hospital and department standards.
• May be required to edit a translated document for accuracy.
• Participates in training programs and departmental meetings.
• Distributes and receives information in a variety of formats including phone, email, and fax.
• Assists with development and execution of special projects as assigned 

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Prefer up to one year of related professional experience.
• Professional experience in a healthcare setting in a similar role preferred.
• Must be a certified interpreter or receive certification within 6 months of hire.
• Familiarity with medical terminology preferred.
• Requires fluency in both Spanish and English.
• Medical Interpreter certification required and must be kept current throughout employment in this position.

SALARY INFORMATION:

• $21.00 - $25.34 Dependent on experience may vary outside this range
