Medical Assistant (Ft) Neurosurgery

Job Overview:
UPA-DCMC Neurosurgery is looking for a Certified Medical Assistant to perform routine clinical and clerical tasks under the direction of a physician or other health practitioner. Clinical duties may include taking and recording vital signs, medical histories, preparing patients for examination, drawing blood, processing prescription refills, and assists with minor procedures as directed by a physician or health practitioner. The CMA acts as a practice ambassador contributing to overall patient experience, safety, and privacy.
Qualifications:
Required:

• High School Diploma or GED
• BLS Certification approved by AHA
• Medical Assistant Certification: NHA, NCCT, AMT, AAMA, NCMA, AMCA, or NAHP
• At least one year of experience in clinical assisting
• Call Center phone ethics
  Good communication skills
  Neat, professional appearance
  Pleasant speaking voice and demeanor
  Working knowledge of managed care basics
  Experience performing lab tests and handling lab paperwork
  Comfortable using email and interacting with Internet applications
  Knowledge of practice management and word processing software

Preferred:

• Phlebotomy and EKG
• Training in Neurosurgical Department assisting a plus
• Knowledge of electronic medical record (EMR) systems

Certifications and Licenses Required:

• BLS Certification approved by AHA
• Medical Assistant Certification or obtains certification within 6 months of hire: NHA, NCCT, AMT, AAMA, NCMA, AMCA, or NAHP

Scheduling Requirements:

• Monday - Friday
• Full-Time

Essential Functions:

• Clinical Support
• Greet patients and escort them from the waiting room to exam rooms; prepare patients for exam or treatment
• Prepares exam and treatment rooms with necessary instruments
• Assists physicians in preparing for examinations and minor procedures
• Pre-certifies surgical and other procedures, if appropriate
• Schedules tests and off-site procedures when necessary
• Communicates physician referral requests to referral staff for processing
• Prepares and maintains supplies and equipment for treatments, including sterilization
• Disposes of contaminated items according to OSHA guidelines
• Obtains and handles laboratory specimens according to CLIA guidelines
• Performs patient education when appropriate
• Replenishes supplies stocks and cleans exam rooms
• Takes medical stock inventory and communicates supply shortages to Manager
• Prepares blood samples for transport to reference lab using centrifuge completes appropriate requisition paperwork for processing and billing of blood specimens
• Ensures that laboratory samples are picked up by the reference laboratory daily
• Directs lab results to physician for review and treatment plan
• Travels to outside locations when needed
• Takes Proper Vitals on each individual patient seen

• Other duties as assigned
