Open Door Health Center has a unique opportunity for you! We are able to offer on-the-job training and coursework through our partners at the Minnesota Association of Community Health Centers (MNACHC).
This apprenticeship will train students to become Medical Assistants through online coursework and in-person training at ODHC. Students are eligible to take the CCMA Exam through the National Healthcare Association after program completion. Students that pass this exam will be Certified Medical Assistants.
Expectations:
- Complete about 2,000 hours of on-the-job training (paid) with the support and guidance of an experience MA coach.
- Complete about 410 hours of supplemental coursework (unpaid). Online coursework.
- Attend 3 in-person lab days with an expert instructor to practice and demonstrate mastery of hands-on technical skills.
- Log and report on the job hours and practice skills as required.
- After the coursework is complete, you will be able to test for your MA Certification to become a CMA.
- Perform other tasks as assigned.
Learned Job Responsibilities:
- Room patients, assist physician/provider in setting up for procedures and/or exams, and gather data.
- Perform required skills as needed for the department.
- Assist and support physician/provider through:
- Organizing and maintaining an efficient daily operation.
- Revising daily schedule, as needed, and updating other team members as appropriate.
- Obtain reports and other necessary documents for the provider to provide patient care in a safe, caring environment.
- Administer medications and immunizations in correct dosages as ordered, following the Six Steps of Medication Administration protocol.
- Observe patients, for reactions, and chart appropriately as required.
- Distribute appropriate educational materials.
- Administer basic wound care including cleaning and bandaging injured areas.
- Assist in the preparation of patient care areas and in the patient admission, transfer, and discharge process as required.
- Follow clinic policies and procedures for infection control and in the handling and, disposing of infectious/hazardous waste materials.
- Ensure messages taken for providers and medical staff are accurate.
- Maintain inventory of supplies in exam rooms and other areas designated by the Medical Services Manager, i.e. immunizations.
