Job Description
Job Purpose: Responsible for the analysis of laboratory specimens and subsequent result reporting according to laboratory protocol and procedures.
Minimum Requirements:
Education & Qualifications: Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology or Laboratory Science or Associate Degree in Medical Laboratory Technician.
Required Licenses/Certifications: MT (ASCP) or equivalent registration or has completed a technician training program in a school accredited/approved by HHS under Medicare laboratory regulations.
Work Experience: 2-4 years clinical laboratory experience strongly preferred.
Essential Job Responsibilities:
•Perform chemical analysis of blood and other body fluid to determine chemical components.
•Performs startup procedures and quality control checks for instruments, solutions, and test results against established standards according to laboratory quality control procedures and manufacturer’s specifications. Monitors QC and documents corrective action. Communicates with technical support when necessary to perform required instrument repairs.
•Performs and documents maintenance on analyzers according to manufacturer’s specifications.
•Inventories laboratory supplies and orders accordingly.
•Cleans equipment and work area and disposes of contaminated materials according to the Exposure Control Plan.
•Verifies condition of patient specimens and test results and notes less than optimal specimen conditions on report.
•Collects data, prepares reports, answers correspondence, and compiles statistics as directed.
•Notifies the Physician of all panic values and documents notification. Calls answering service when Physician cannot be notified.
•Ensures testing systems provide quality laboratory services for pre-analytic, analytic and post-analytic phases of testing
•Utilizes verification procedures to determine accuracy, precision and quality performance of testing to produce accurate and reliable results.
•Performs testing on samples from an approved proficiency testing (PT) program and attests that the PT samples are tested as patient samples.
•Ensures that PT results are returned to the program in a timely manner and that all results are reviewed with the staff.
•Ensures that results are reported with pertinent information required for interpretation only when all systems have been proven to be functioning properly.
•Ensures effective communication of operations outside the norm.
•Attends all mandatory education programs and can describe his/her responsibilities related to general safety and regulatory compliance
•Attends all required department-specific education and training programs and can describe his/her responsibilities related to department safety and specific job related hazards.
•Follows the hospital exposure control plans/blood borne and airborne pathogens.
•Demonstrates proper body mechanics in all functions
•Wears proper identification while on duty
•Perform other duties as assigned
