Minimum Salary: $87,485.00  Mid-Point Salary: $109,346 Maximum Salary: $131,206.00   

At the Port of Seattle, we anticipate making salary offers between the minimum and midpoint of the salary range. Offers will be based on experience similar to the Port job being applied for as well as a review of pay rates for Port employees performing similar work. Salary ranges are under review and subject to change.

 

Some of what you'll be doing:

As the Mechanical Engineer in our Facilities & Infrastructure department, you will be working under the direction and guidance of a licensed Mechanical Engineer, assist with facilities and mechanical equipment evaluation, calculations, design standards research, coordination, and asset identification tasks at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.

  • You will assist with moderate mechanical design and system evaluation tasks in support of Capital Projects and Asset Management. 
  • You will gather and correlate basic engineering data using established and well-defined procedures with an emphasis on fire and life safety systems, including active smoke control, firefighter smoke control panels, fire suppression, fire risers and standpipes, fire sprinklers, fire pumps, clean agent extinguishing systems, fire/smoke dampers, kitchen hoods, and fire alarms.
  • You will assist Maintenance on the installation, troubleshooting, replacement and operation of mechanical Infrastructure systems and equipment.
  • You will participate in project planning meetings regarding project objectives, plan scope, schedule, and budget. 
  • You will perform standard computations or analysis. 
  • You will do site observation of construction and commissioning activities for conformance with Port standards. Attend construction meetings or commissioning activities for small to medium projects. 
  • You will lead site investigation of mechanical infrastructure asset inventory. 
  • You will develop, negotiate, and manage mechanical consultant contracts, budgets, and schedules for design. 
  • You will evaluate project design drawings for small capital and expense projects for conformance to mechanical standards and specifications. 
  • You will assist with preparation of system calculations and master record utility drawings using computer-aided drafting software or other applications to support renewal and replacement efforts and ensure sufficient capacity to meet new demand from capital projects. 
  • You will participate in the development of presentations and documents including Commission memos and procurement documents.
  • You will assist analysis of new technologies for compatibilities with existing systems and life cycle costs. 
  • You will verify existing infrastructure capacity related to proposed modifications and attends mechanical infrastructure meetings with other internal departments.

Who you are:

  • Experienced – You have five (5) years of experience in Mechanical Engineering and the ability to get Engineer-In-Training Certification (EIT) within one (1) year.
  • Educated – You possess a Bachelor’s degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related field from an ABET accredited school.
  • Desired – We hope you have an Engineer-In-Training Certification (EIT).
  • Effective Communicator – You are an excellent listener with the ability to translate customer requests into solutions and helping leaders to understand information or issues.
  • Relationship Builder – You are someone who can work with diverse staff at various levels of the organization to resolve problems while providing excellent guidance.
  • Teamwork – You are a strong team-oriented person and willing to help your team to get tasks completed.
  • Customer Service Minded – You are focused on delivering quality customer service, respecting different opinions, and working toward offering solutions.

What else you need to know: 

  • Driver’s License – You will need a valid Washington State Driver’s License, or the ability to obtain one, in order to travel locally to project sites. 
  • Work Schedule – Your normal work schedule will be Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (40 hours per week). Slightly more flexible start and end times are available in this role. Periodic work during evenings or weekends will be required.  Regular predictable attendance is required. Some telework is available in this role.   
  • Work Environment – You will primarily work in an office environment. You will also visit mechanical/electrical spaces, utility tunnels, active construction sites, and outdoors while working frequently near operating equipment such as boilers, chillers, fans, pumps, baggage handling equipment, tugs, and aircraft.
  • Grade Review – The pay range and grade for non-represented positions are under review and subject to change as part of the Port’s work to implement a new pay program. This review is intended to ensure that positions are aligned with the new program that will be implemented in early 2024.
  • Washington State Residency Requirement – Employees must establish a residence in Washington state within 30 days of their first day of employment and must maintain a residence in Washington State during their employment with the Port of Seattle. If a position is eligible to telework, work performed while teleworking must be performed in Washington State.
  • Security Requirements – As the successful candidate, you must pass a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) background check as well as a criminal history background check with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Your employment will be contingent upon obtaining a Port of Seattle ID badge upon clearance. You may also be required to obtain a U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) Customs Seal within 30 days of hire.
