Job Summary:
The
Materials Manager will oversee the lifecycle of our inventory and direct the activities of the Purchasing and Warehouse functions. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and implementing strategies for inventory control and purchasing to reduce costs and improve efficiency. This role reports to the Production Operations Director.
Job Description:
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Manage priorities and activities for a diverse team of Warehouse & Purchasing departments.
- Lead in talent acquisition systems and processes, including recruitment activities and decisions on selections.
- Identify and nurture talent within the team for future leadership roles.
- Provide resources to help employees develop skills and supports their career interests including mentorship, workforce development and succession planning.
- Identify growth opportunities, build development plans with direct reports and conducting development discussions.
- Establish and communicate performance expectations.
- Identify performance gaps and monitor performance to ensure development plans are met.
- Ensure fair and equal treatment of employees, avoiding favoritism, addressing difficult issues (with assistance from Human Resources), and practices empathy and compassion.
- Promote Company policies, procedures, mission, and values by training and providing direction to direct reports in their use and application.
- Oversees the workflow and schedules of the department.

Duties/Responsibilities:
- Develop, implement, and manage policies and procedures for inventory control, purchasing.
- Oversee operations of the Warehouse, ensuring efficient material storage and handling.
- Collaborate with internal departments and leadership to identify and develop needs and requirements for equipment, materials, products, and acceptable substitutions, ensuring optimal stock levels and timely availability.
- Resolves escalated grievances with vendors, contractors, and suppliers.
- Ability to lead negotiations and identify ideal suppliers based on quality, cost, and reliability.
- Conduct evaluations of current Warehouse and Purchasing processes for efficiency and effectiveness; spearhead the implementation of improvements to optimize performance.
- Effectively oversee inventory management and operational risk, ensuring contingency plans are developed and implemented to maintain uninterrupted supply chain operations.
- Ensure that any Material Requirements Planning system (MRP) in place is effective and that data is accurate and up to date and resolve any issues as required.
- Oversee inventory audits and analyses to identify variances and implement corrective actions.
- Oversee the maintenance of accurate records of purchases, pricing, and other important data.
- Take ownership of inventory related issues that arise, including over or under delivery, follow up and implement corrective actions, especially in the event of material shortages that affect production and customer on-time deliveries.

Required Skills/Abilities:
- High level of flexibility, commitment, and performance standards.
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills for effective interactions with team members, cross-functional teams, customers and leadership.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and related software(s) with a proficiency in Microsoft Excel heavily focused on ability to create/export reports and pivot tables.
- Ability to leverage expertise and provide a managerial approach to guide a team in reaching the Companies objectives.
- Strong understanding of supply chain management principles and inventory control systems.
- High level of attention to detail due to inventory control and spend values.
Education and Experience:
- Five (5) years of progressive experience in purchasing or warehouse required.
- Three (3) years of experience in materials management highly preferred.
- Knowledge and experience using inventory control systems and material requirements planning (MRP) is required.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer/laptop.
- Must be able to life up to 10 pounds at a time.
- Ability to travel (less than 10%), sometimes for extended periods, which may involve sitting during transit and walking at various locations.
- Must be able to handle high utilization of hand and wrist dexterity.
