Job description

Intro

Our mission is to decarbonize the "hard-to-abate" heavy industrial sectors of the world economy with a new class of electrolyzers. Advanced Ionics is seeking a highly motivated Engineer to join our growing team that is dedicated to developing transformational “green hydrogen” industrial electrolyzer systems.

You are responsible for developing high temperature films, coatings, seals and production methods for our cutting-edge electrolyzer cell technology. Our cells operate using steam as an input, in a stressful environment with hydrogen and oxygen produced on opposing sides of the cell.

You’re the right candidate for this job if you enjoy workplaces where everyone has a voice, if you’re passionate about solving climate change through complex and wonky markets, and if you’re willing to propose a new idea, write a memo, code a script, and turn a wrench.

What You’ll Do

  • Design and develop high temperature materials for multiple portions of our electrolyzer cell, taking into account material compatibility, mechanical properties, and other relevant factors.
  • Develop production methods and processes of various electrolyzer materials.
  • Conduct simulations and testing to evaluate the performance of materials and processing methods under various operating conditions.
  • Collaborate with other engineers and scientists to optimize material performance, and ensure that they meet system requirements.
  • Work with suppliers to source and select appropriate materials and equipment.
  • Develop and maintain documentation and specifications related to seals.
  • Participate in cross-functional teams to ensure that component designs are integrated effectively with overall stack and system designs.
  • Contribute to the development of new product and technology strategies related to seals.

About Advanced Ionics:

At Advanced Ionics, we’ve created a green hydrogen platform that allows industrial hydrogen producers and users to achieve sustainability and decarbonize, without sacrificing profit. We combine our patented Symbiotic electrolyzer technology with our customers’ onsite process and waste heat to produce the lowest-cost green hydrogen on the market.

We’re a thoughtful, venture-backed, and mission-oriented team of engineers, creatives, and business people looking to change the world. And, we’re proud to say we’re headquartered in the great city of Milwaukee, in the heart of the industrial Midwest.

Consistent with our commitment to diversity & inclusion, we value people with the ability to work on diverse teams and with a diverse range of people. We especially encourage members of traditionally underrepresented communities to apply, including women, people of color, LGBTQ people, veterans, and people with disabilities.

We know the right candidate might not check every box in this job description. You could also have important skills we haven't thought of. If you think you’re a great candidate for this role, apply and tell us why. To apply, send us a resume and a few sentences about why you are interested in this position and what you bring to the table. We’re looking forward to hearing from you!

What You’ve Done to Get Here:

  • You have at least 5 years of experience in designing and developing ceramic materials for complex systems, preferably in the high temperature electrolyzer, fuel cell, or adjacent industries.
  • You have the ability to demonstrate strong knowledge of high temperature seals, cast films and supporting materials, including glasses, ceramics, micas, vermiculites, and high temperature polymers.
  • You have experience with simulation and testing techniques related to seals.
  • You possess knowledge of electrolyzer or fuel cell systems and their unique requirements for gaskets and seals (preferred).
  • You have a proven ability to work with unconventional materials and unorthodox methods and can demonstrate proven results
  • You have the ability to execute design of experiments (DOE) protocols with robust statistics-backed methods (preferred).
