Job Description

Purpose: To cultivate and promote the Co-op’s identity and presence within the store and in the community. To develop and implement strategies for increasing membership, member/owner cohesiveness and participation. To administer all member benefits and programs and promote education related to co-op Ends, values, and principles.
 

Status: Reports to General Manager| Supervises Marketing + Outreach Volunteers| 15-20 hours per week.


Responsibilities:

Marketing:

  • Create and implement an annual marketing plan and calendar that reflects the Co-ops’ Ends and is derived from the multi year plan with guidance from the General Manager.

  • Serve as managing editor of the co-op’s e-newsletter (supply content, copy edit content, ensure timely publication, etc).

  • Maintain and enhance the Co-op’s online presence, social media, website, and listings on online directories (keeping content current, news, events, Sales, Owner Deals, local producers, seasonal offerings, etc.)

  • In conjunction with the management team, design and manage Co-op brand, including all signage, displays and merchandising.

  • Create graphic pieces for marketing purposes including social, web, print, and in-store (advertisements, event posters, coupons, brochures, producer profiles, etc) in keeping with established brand guidelines.

  • Design and ensure timely printing of logo merchandise ( t-shirts, hats, bags, etc.)

  • Design and ensure timely publication of Annual Report and support the GM with the production of the Ends report as requested.

  • Develop networks with other cooperatives and credit unions, and work to expand the role of cooperatives in general.

  • Develop, write, and publish press releases as needed, with guidance from the General Manager.

Member-Ownership Support:

  • Plan and promote semi-annual ownership + equity drives in partnership with GM and Operations Manager.

  • Manage and maintain materials for new joins.

  • Plan and promote bi-monthly Owner Appreciation Day.

  • Manage member–owner communications (support staff training about ownership, member orientations, member-owner concerns and questions, design and distribute Annual Report).

  • Develop and maintain the Co-ops Shop South Philly Business Partnership Program, identifying and onboarding new values-aligned, locally-owned businesses to the program.

  • Support communication between member-owners and Board (serve on Membership committees, attend Membership meetings, and support forums and focus groups as appropriate).

  • Coordinate outreach and events volunteers, oversee their performance and communication.

  • Generate reports as requested on key indicators of membership, including new members, percentage of sales to members, level of member investment, working member participation, and others.

  • Create, implement and assess member owner surveys, events and opportunities for member participation in the co-op.

  • Ensure timely and effective communication with regard to member comments and feedback.

Outreach, Events, + Education:

  • Develop and carry out education programs on cooperatives and campaigns that promote cooperatives.

  • Develop and coordinate co-sponsored education programs on food, nutrition, health, wellness, food justice, and sustainability, with the assistance of community partners, in alignment with the co-ops strategic plan.

  • Coordinate round up at the register, other donations programs, and outreach contributions to the community (identify community partners, respond to requests, allocate resources appropriately).

  • Support the Co-op's DEI work and represent the Co-op with regard to Diversity and Inclusion within the community. Active participation in the development, implementation and involvement with diversity, inclusion and equality initiatives in the community and at the Co-op.

  • Organize member-owner events (Annual Meeting, Co-op Month celebration, etc.)

  • Support election related print and promotional materials.

  • Organize and manage the Co-op’s presence at public events to promote the Co-op in the community.

Administration + Other:

  • Foster positive working relations with staff.

  • Preparing and editing letters, reports, memos, and emails.

  • Model excellent customer service and communication skills.

  • Work closely with the General Manager to ensure that all staff are trained effectively in cooperative principles and member-owner system and benefits.

  • Stay current on trends in organic food industry and marketing.

  • Attend Management Team meetings, storewide meetings. and other meetings as directed.

  • Prepare reports as required by the General Manager.

  • Answer and route phone calls and emails, take and route messages as needed.

  • Perform other tasks conveyed by the General Manager.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Familiarity with cooperatives and with natural foods.

  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.

  • Demonstrated experience writing and editing a variety of materials including press releases, feature stories, web content and educational materials.

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively multi-task, including organizational, prioritization, and time management skills.

  • Excellent customer service skills.

  • Ability to work closely and collaboratively with others.

  • Graphic design experience and familiarity with software used for marketing materials.

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule to meet the needs of the business
