The City and County of Denver has an exciting opportunity for an intern to serve in the Office of the Clerk & Recorder Paul D. López. Join our team of dedicated public servants in supporting residents across a variety of critical city and county functions.
The Office of the Clerk and Recorder serves Denver residents through 3 divisions: the Records and Public Trustee Division, the Elections Division and Administration, and is involved in state and local law and rulemaking for all of the functions under its purview. Through these functions, our office is part of some of the most important parts of Denverite's lives: getting married, owning property, and having a say in their government.
The Elections Division is responsible for conducting federal, state, city and county of Denver, and district elections in a fair, accurate, accessible and transparent manner. The division is also charged with maintaining accurate voter registration and election records.
  • The division is comprised of the Elections Administration, Operations, and Voter Services Departments, in addition to in-house data architects and business operations specialists.

The Records and Public Trustee Divisionis comprised of the Recordings and Marriages, Public Trustee, and City Clerk Departments.
  • Recordings and Marriages is responsible for all recording services for the City and County of Denver as well as issuing marriages and civil union licenses.
  • The Public Trustee Department administers foreclosures according to the law, sells homes at auction when necessary, and executes releases of deeds of trust.
  • The City Clerk Department administers the city's campaign finance laws, registration of lobbyists, and coordinates the disclosure of ethics, gifts, and financial information. The department maintains both city and public records.

The Administration Division is comprised of Public Affairs (formerly Communications and Civic Engagement), Finance, Technology, Legal and Regulatory Compliance as well as the Office of the Deputy Clerk and Recorder.
  • This role will operate under this division, most primarily under the Public Affairs Department in the Communications.

As a Communications Manager, you will work on and oversee:

Essential Duties
  • Develops operational plan for the work area that include Marketing and sales campaigns and media and Communications tactics in conjunction with departmental plans by creating goals and objectives that meet business needs and initiatives, as well as tracking and managing financial resources
  • Establishes and maintains good working relationships with media representatives, acts as a department's principal spokesperson by arranging press coverage for a variety of public events and community outreach efforts, and oversees and coordinates the production and distribution of public information and announcements
  • Advises management on how departmental direction and policy actions may be perceived by the public and press and recommends approaches on how to improve or alter a message that plays better in the arena of public opinion
  • Develops and updates departmental policy for public information responses, responds to critical or sensitive public information/CORA requests from the public, media, elected/appointed officials, and/or others, and assures legal compliance in areas affecting public access to information
  • Manages the work of professional staff members engaged in the design, preparation, and production of public information materials, Marketing and public involvement programs, sponsorships, fundraising, grants, and other activities
  • Develops goals, documents performance, provides performance feedback and formally evaluates the work of the employee; provides reward and recognition for proper and efficient performance. Assists staff to achieve performance standards and identifies opportunities for continual improvement to performance standards
  • Selects, trains, develops, and evaluates subordinate staff and makes decisions on hiring, terminations, promotions, and disciplinary actions as required
  • Communicates annual work plans to employees and ensures employees are focused on the work plan and achieving performance standards.

About You
Our ideal candidate will have:
  • Experience with at least one large scale marketing or customer relationship management (CRM) tool from the following: Mailchimp, Salesforce, Constant Contact, HubSpot, Action Network, NGP, or similar tool
  • Experience leading and coordinating press relations including composing and sending releases, managing press contacts, preparing spokespeople for on-camera interviews, appearing on-camera for interview, and using press monitoring software.
  • Experience with at least one of the following digital creative software: Adobe (Lightroom, Illustrator, Premiere, InDesign) or equivalent
  • Proficiency with social media platforms including Instagram, Twitter and Facebook
  • Experience with both paid and organic marketing strategies including print and digital media
  • Experience building, managing, and/or updating a website
  • Five (5) years of professional experience at the type and level of a Marketing/Communications Specialist in communications, marketing, and/or public relations

  • Experience Requirement: Three (3) years of professional experience at the type and level of a Marketing/Communications Specialist in communications, marketing, and/or public relations
  • Education/Experience Equivalency: One (1) year of the appropriate type and level of experience may be substituted for each required year of post-high school education. Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirements
