Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps’ Mission
Our vision is to lead our Nation's back to ecological and cultural well-being by engaging underrepresented Indigenous youth and young adults in conservation service programs that reconnect participants to the land, their cultural heritage, and their traditions. Bureau of Land Management- Colorado Office of Communications
The BLM Colorado Office of Communications is a dynamic organization that supports the BLM mission across the state of Colorado. The Office of Communications is responsible for external (media, public, government organizations, NGOs, etc.) communications, digital media communications, and internal communications.
Program Overview:
Intern will work within conjunction with the Denver Office of Communications. They will learn the basics of news media and digital media communications to-draft news releases, social media posts, develop content for the website and other media as appropriate. They will develop and produce a series of 8 -10 short (5 minutes or less) videos on behalf of BLM Colorado, with topics and themes determined in coordination with the internship supervisor. Some videos may be focused on ecosystem restoration work occurring across BLM Colorado. The videos would be distributed on public facing BLM Colorado sites such as YouTube, Facebook, and the blm.gov/Colorado website. The purpose of the videos could be to educate members of the public on work being done, the incorporation of traditional ecological knowledge or how/why the ecosystems at risk will be conserved.
While intern is working with staff in the Office of Communications. Part of their video projects will require the intern spend time (in the field) with wildlife biologists, botanists, fisheries biologists, or other resource management staff. The intern will also work with offices across the state and will have the opportunity to identify video projects that feature or highlight interests around tribal engagement, traditional ecological knowledge, environmental justice, or other topics of interest to the intern that are connected to the mission, priorities, and values of BLM Colorado. Video project may also include recruitment videos that highlight different jobs available in the BLM from wildland firefighter, oil, and gas well inspector, land surveyor and more.
Required Skills
Essential functions and responsibilities:
1.Work with supervisor to draft news releases, communications plans, and social media posts that
support and promote the BLM mission in Colorado.
a. Work with subject matter experts to research content for news releases and
communications plans
b. Work with supervisor to publish approved news releases on to website and social media
platforms.
c. Track coverage and respond to inquiry as appropriate with guidance from supervisor.
2. Video Production
a. Work with supervisor to determine the themes/topics of interest for production of 8-10
short videos.
b. Identify with supervisor and other staff opportunities to visit field office locations for
shooting video or taking photos. With supervisor develop a schedule for production.
c. Independently travel (or with peer) to identified field locations to shoot video, conduct
interviews, and other associated tasks required for video production.
d. Independently produce videos with feedback and general direction from supervisor and
other staff. Adjust, edit and finalize videos based on feedback for public distribution.
3. Community Engagement and Internal Communications
a. Work with supervisor to determine opportunities for community engagement and support
public meetings (virtual or in person);
b. Support internal communications strategy by identifying, researching, writing and publishing
BLM Daily articles highlighting work and projects being completed in BLM CO.
c. Identify new audiences for engagement and building with supervisor an outreach strategy.
Training opportunities will be provided for candidate during their internship.
General Qualifications:
- Junior or higher in undergraduate pursuing undergraduate or graduate degrees in communications,
mass communications, English, journalism, anthropology, political science, graphic design, or related
fields. It is also suitable for recent graduates of similar programs.
- The successful applicant must be reliable, punctual, and self-motivated and able to work
independently, both via telework or in person, with limited supervision after initial training and
assignment of tasks.
- Applicant must have a visual acuity and valid license to operate motor vehicles and to determine the
accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of work assigned. Applicant must be able to receive detailed
information through written and/or oral communication and convey important spoken and/or
written instructions accurately and effectively.
Preferred Qualifications:
Basic-Intermediate videography/production skills (preferred but not required)
Required Experience
Requirements:
• 21 years of age or older
• U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Resident Card, INS form I-551
• A passport indicating that the INS has been approved it as temporary evidence of lawful admission
for permanent residence A departure record (INS 194) indication that the INS has approved it as
temporary evidence of lawful admission for permanent residence.
• Valid driver’s license
• Participate in occasional offsite in person/virtual meetings, trainings, and presentations.
• Selected intern will have to pass a DOI security background check
