The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) manages the efficient flow of electricity on more than 11,000 circuit-miles of high-voltage transmission lines, dispatching power from hundreds of generating units across the state.
The NYISO's Market Solutions Engineering team invites applications for a full-time Market Solutions Engineer.
The Market Solutions Engineer will be responsible for designing and conducting market simulation studies of potential market evolutions, ensuring that they are beneficial in the NYISO market product portfolios under the direction of the Manager, Market Solutions Engineering. This individual will lead the design and complete development of a market simulator which will be used as a validation tool to analyze future Energy, Capacity, Transmission Congestion Contract Auctions and Demand Response market products before implementation, and provide support in the development of software and techniques to assist in analyzing future market functions. Strong Power Systems or Operations Research with electricity market knowledge is desired for this position.
Qualifications include:
- Master's Degree (MS) in Electrical Engineering, Operations Research or related technical field required; Ph.D. preferred.
- Course studies in power system operation and control, statistical analysis and optimization techniques particularly using linear programming based computer models are desired.
- At least two years experience in the areas of Electrical Engineering and/or Operations Research with software simulation experience is preferred.
- Experience using computer programs such as Energy Management Systems, Security Constrained Unit Commitment (SCUC) and Real-Time Scheduling (RTS), Grid View, GE-MAPS, PROMOD, Modeling Language for Mathematical Programming like AMPL, MATLAB or GAMS is highly desirable.
- Background in models and databases used in power system analyses, and business experience in electric power systems or wholesale electric markets are desired; or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- Familiarity with Unix/Linux platforms and knowledge of scripting language such as Python is desirable.
Candidates at the Senior Engineer level or the Associate Engineer level will be considered depending on the experience and skillsets of the candidates applying for the position.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or government regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, vendors, Market Participants and the general public.
- Ability to comprehend and apply principles of advanced calculus, modern algebra and advanced optimization theory. Ability to work with concepts such as limits, rings, quadratic and differential equations and proofs of theorems.
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
- ORACLE DB, SQL queries.
- Knowledge of the NYS electric power system desirable.
