Overview
The Coastal Sciences Division within the Energy and Environment Directorate at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is seeking an Operations Specialist to assist with the safe conduct of Marine Science Operations associated with the PNNL Sequim Campus. The successful candidate will be working with a PNNL Sequim focused Operations team and with researchers to ensure that PNNL processes and procedures are followed for all laboratory and field research activities.
Coastal Sciences Division includes technical experts studying coastal ecosystem functions and restoration ecology, conducting experiments on marine carbon dioxide removal, quantifying and improving environmental performance of renewable ocean energy systems through environmental monitoring and technology development, and research focused on maritime decarbonization strategies. The focus of this position will be to support researchers and the implementation of their studies by providing safe working conditions in marine and aquatic environments including at the PNNL-Sequim campus and at off-site field locations.
Responsibilities
This position will collaborate with scientists and engineers, research line management, other Operations Specialists, and facilities staff to both support and lead safe execution of field- and lab-based research activities.
This position will be expected to:
  • Use analytical thinking, tools, and judgement to identify innovative solutions.

  • Nurture an intellectual environment conducive to scientific research, development, and innovation that retains and attracts the highest caliber scientific staff and ensures appropriate mentoring and supervision of postdocs and students.
  • Apply Marine Science expertise to interpret needs and challenges and recommend best practices to improve processes and products.
  • Demonstrates experience working on complex problems and providing solutions.
  • Establish and maintain a culture of integrity, commitment to scientific and technical excellence, and delivery on commitments and operational effectiveness.
  • Exercises judgment in selecting methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria to solve problems.
  • Develops a professional network throughout the laboratory.
  • Approximately 10% travel required.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
  • BS/BA and 7 years of relevant experienc -OR-
  • MS/MA or higher and 5 years of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Graduate degree in Marine Science, or equivalent
  • Demonstrated experience leading research activities in marine environments.
  • Experience operating vessels in marine environments.
  • Open Water Diver Scuba certified, with advanced certifications.
  • Possesses outstanding organizational skills, the ability to prioritize and take ownership for commitments and action items.

In accordance with Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) and Department of Energy (DOE) Order 473.1A, new employees are required to obtain and maintain a HSPD-12 Personal Identity Verification (PIV) Credential. To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. This investigation includes a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last year. This includes marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.
Mandatory Requirements
Please be aware that the Department of Energy (DOE) prohibits DOE employees and contractors from having any affiliation with the foreign government of a country DOE has identified as a "country of risk" without explicit approval by DOE and Battelle.
