Position Summary
The Indiana University Jacobs School of Music seeks candidates for a faculty position as Managing Directorof Orchestras and Instrumental Ensembles. This position is a twelve-month, tenure-ineligible, renewable position with an initial three-year appointment. The Managing Directorof Orchestras and Instrumental Ensembles is responsible for administering the personnel of the Instrumental Ensembles at the Jacobs School of Music including artistic administration and artist stewardship. Approximately 700 instrumental students are assigned each semester to one of 15 Instrumental Ensembles.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Supervises the planning, formation, and enrollment process of all Instrumental Ensembles.
  • Oversees the coordination of repertoire of each orchestra in consultation with faculty and guest conductors.
  • Assists conducting faculty in mentoring instrumental students and creates a positive and professional artistic environment.
  • Coordinates assignments for the Jacobs School orchestras (6 ensembles) through the audition process, working with faculty members to determine the various needs/levels of the ensembles.
  • Attends rehearsals and performances with responsibility for the assignment of grades for all 15 ensembles in collaboration with and consultation from faculty members who supervise and/or conduct these ensembles at various times.
  • Serves as the representative of the orchestral conducting department for the formation of the composite performance calendar along with the chairs and other administrators of performing ensembles. Responsible for creating rehearsal schedules for orchestral activities, including those related to opera and ballet productions, and representing the needs of this area during the creation of the composite calendar.
  • Serves as national/international tour manager for all orchestral ensembles.
  • Serves as the primary contact person for all guest conductors and any other guest artists as assigned by the Deans of the Jacobs School of Music or their delegate.
  • Negotiates contractual agreements with all guest conductors of the orchestral program in coordination with the Assistant Dean for Performance, guest audition committees, and any other guests as assigned by the administration.
  • Additional duties include administration of the ad hoc orchestral concerts and oversight of all orchestral events. These duties may be shared with an assistant as needed.
  • Supervises and initiates the scheduling and contracting of outside groups that are needed to perform for such circumstances as the office of the President, the IU Foundation, the Dean of the Jacobs School, as well as groups that are contracted to perform for other dignitaries such as donors of the university or others with unique needs.

The Managing Directorof Orchestras and Instrumental Ensembles supervises the Orchestra/Choral Ensemble Librarian, an assistant, and a student crew of 12-20 individuals.

Basic Qualifications
  • Proven experience in all aspects of professional and/or academic orchestra management.
  • Expert knowledge of orchestral repertoire and demonstrated fluency in score reading expected.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Attention to detail required.
  • Master's degree in music performance required.
  • Must be available to work nights and weekends.
