PPL’s Data & Analytics Office is seeking a Data Engineering Manager to be an integral part of the Digital Transformation. Under limited supervision, this role leads both enterprise and product/project level data engineering efforts will be one of the key players building PPL’s cloud data platform. Working with Product & Engineering and other stakeholders, the Data Engineering Manager will be instrumental in building and scaling PPL’s Cloud Data Platform. She / he will be responsible for the design, development, performance and support of the Cloud Platform. The Data Engineering Manager will manage the technical leads and the data engineering staff and create a scalable engineering organization to support the growth of the Data Platform. She / he is expected to prove out emerging technologies (IoT, ML etc) to develop solutions that help scale the data platform. The Data Engineering Manager is recognized as an expert in their functional area and will be expected to mentor other technical team members on the team. The role will report to the Director, Data Engineering.
Lead technical leads and data engineers to build and support the Cloud Data Platform that meet performance, scalability, reliability, and security needs.- Lead multiple, large, highly complex efforts simultaneously, making key development decisions.
- Provide proactive technical oversight and mentorship to development teams fostering re-use, design for scale, stability, and operational efficiency based on strategic business needs
- Develop engineering best practices and processes for the Data Engineering team
- Research and evaluate emerging data engineering technologies for applicability and adoption.
- Build prototypes of learning solutions to show proof-of-concepts and develop scalable integrated enterprise services
- Present technical ideas and solutions to internal and external team members.
- Contribute to a positive culture of continuous improvement and operational excellence by identifying and implementing process improvements where appropriate.
- Collaborate with architects, business users, system analysts, developers, and ecosystem partners to bring innovative ideas from conception to launch at scale
- Work in an iterative/Agile environment and be a strong team player
- Adopt emerging technologies and launch products / services faster with rapid prototyping & iterative methods
- Proven ability to take prototypes to production, following engineering best practices
- May be assigned an Electric Utilities emergency and storm role. This is a special assignment that comes into play during storms and other emergencies when the company needs to restore power or respond to other issues affecting customer service. This role may necessitate the need to work after-hours, outside of your normal schedule.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related discipline- At least 10 years of experience in design and development of big data, database and data warehouse and delivery
- Minimum of 5 years of professional experience leading teams in the following areas:
- Cloud based data engineering and DevOps practices
- Big Data/analytics/information analysis/database management in the cloud
- IoT/event-driven/microservices in the cloud
- In-depth knowledge of database structures/ data warehousing principles, and experience in SQL across different platforms including structured and unstructured data from various enterprise sources.
- Proven technical skills in data modeling, data management, data pipelines, ETL/ELT and data retention concepts and practices.
- Extensive hands-on experience implementing data migration and data processing using Azure services: Serverless Architecture, Azure Storage, Azure SQL DB/DW, Data Factory, Azure Stream Analytics, Synapse Analytics, HDInsight, Databricks, Cosmos DB, ML Studio, AI/ML, Azure Functions, ARM Templates, Azure DevOps, CI/CD etc.
- Extensive knowledge of message queuing, stream processing, and highly scalable ‘big data’ data stores and experience with building and optimizing ‘big data’ data pipelines, architectures and data sets.
- Initiative and passion for finding solutions to ambiguous problems and ability to work in difficult situations and across organizational boundaries.
- Strong communication skills both written and verbal, with ability to communicate or convey the results to audience at all levels.
- Familiar with the latest technologies, trends, standards, products, and applicability
- Ability to effectively adapt to rapid technological and business change while maintaining enthusiasm and displaying sound judgment
