General Purpose
The Public WorksMaintenance Worker is responsible for performing manual, semi-skilled, and skilled maintenance work. The Maintenance Worker position operates a variety of equipment and machinery in the construction, maintenance, repair, installation, and replacement of the Village's water, sanitary sewer, street, parkway, and storm drainage facilities and systems. In addition, the Maintenance Worker position participates in leaf and snow removal operations and performs facility, vehicle, and equipment maintenance in coordination with other Public Works divisions and operations. This position must be able to take direction, as well as work independently and as a part of a coordinated team.
Essential Functions
- Operate trucks and construction equipment of various sizes and weights, such as, but not limited to, trucks, trailers, snow plow, backhoe, pay loader, tractor, leaf machine, jetter/inductor truck, chainsaw, computers, cameras, and various motorized or energized equipment, attachments, and hand operated tools.
- Perform pavement maintenance and repair, such as saw cutting; pavement breaking, removal, and disposal; placing, finishing, and using concrete; milling/grinding bituminous pavement; laying, luting, raking, and compacting bituminous mixtures; and pothole patching.
- Locate dangerous conditions, such as street cave-ins and road obstructions and undertake corrective action or advise supervisor of need for assistance.
- Perform parkway/roadside maintenance, which includes the removal of stump cuttings; backfilling, repairing and seeding disturbed parkway areas; leaf collection; removal, replacement and repair of sidewalks; brush and bush trimming; and mowing of roadside vegetation.
- Make and/or install traffic control and street signage; layout and apply pavement markings with walk-behind spray machine.
- Collect refuse on regular or special collection routes; operate refuse packer truck and/or related equipment.
- Perform operations related to snow and ice control, including anti-icing and de-icing applications; plowing streets; plowing sidewalks; and disposing of snow from commercial areas.
- Hand-dig and backfill trenches. Install, inspect, maintain, and repair sanitary sewers, storm sewers, catch basins, manholes, vaults, pressure regulators, gate valves, other control devices, and auxiliary equipment.
- Locate and determine cause of sewer leaks and backups; cut, thread, and install pipes.
- Demolish or trim vaults and manholes; install and build wooden forms, sheeting, shoring, and bracing for excavation.
- Erect steel reinforcing for concrete vaults and manholes; mix, pour and/or finish concrete; remove forms after concrete has set.
- Patch cracks in underground vaults and manholes; brush or spray walls with waterproof compounds.
- Record installation, maintenance, repair and replacement actions taken; prepare reports on and advise supervisor of work progress and need for additional resources to complete assignments.
- Perform minor maintenance on hand and power tools and equipment.
- Perform light maintenance on vehicles and equipment; recommend maintenance and repair of such as needed.
- Provide janitorial services, grounds keeping, and minor maintenance for Village facilities.
- Assist other specialized work crews, departments, utilities, or contractors, in the event of emergency, personnel shortage, major construction or maintenance activity, or as otherwise needed.
- Perform all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Minimum Qualifications
- Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
- Six (6) months experience in construction, maintenance or related field, or equivalent training and experience.
- Knowledge of general Public Works labor activities, proper and safe construction, maintenance and repair methods, and safe driving skills.
- Ability to read maps, blue prints, and take accurate measurements.
- Possess or obtain valid Illinois CDL Class A or B license.
Other Requirements
The weekly work schedule is normally 40 hours in duration, Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., but may be altered or extended in the event of emergency, personnel shortage or workload. Work is required on some Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. Duties are performed independently and as a team member. Position has "on-call responsibilities" be required to work nights, early mornings, weekends, and/or holidays on short notice.
Work activities may be conducted in all weather conditions, and at all hours of the day, in precarious or confined surroundings and in close proximity to vehicular traffic.

Starting Pay: $65,047/yr.
