HOPI JUNIOR SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
POSITION DESCRIPTION
POSITION TITLE:Maintenance Worker
REPORTS TO: Facilities & Operations Director
DEPARTMENT: Facilities & Operation
CATEGORY: Classified
CONTRACT TERM: Twelve Months (12)
CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt
JOB SUMMARY: The employee is under the general supervision of the Maintenance Foreman and must perform their duties with a minimum of supervision. The job assignments other than the day to day duties are assigned by the Maintenance Foreman. General duties included but are not limited to maintaining facilities in safe operating condition; performing a wide variety of skilled maintenance activities (e.g. carpentry, plumbing, electrical, ventilating systems, alarms, boilers, etc.); addressing immediate operational and/or safety concerns; assisting skilled trades as assigned; ensuring adequate materials are available to complete assignments in a timely manner.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
  1. Operates and maintains boilers and their associated equipment at Hopi Junior/Senior High School. Determines that automatic controls are functioning to maintain proper operating pressures, temperatures and boiler water level.
  2. Maintains, services, and repairs LP gas furnaces and their components.
  3. Repairs LP gas ranges, dish washers, garbage disposals, exhaust fans, heating units, safety valves, steam kettles, hot water heating systems, outside water lines, LP gas lines and all components associated.
  4. Changes filters, gauges, switch thermostats. Checks and adjust drive belts, couplings.
  5. Services boilers and their auxiliary equipment at prescribed intervals. This consists of inspection and repair of Cast iron sections; burners, controls, pumps and boiler water make up systems. During the summer months when boilers are not in operation, performs complete overhaul of the boilers and their associated equipment.
  6. Observes and makes entries into daily log for all boiler operating conditions, at prescribed intervals manually blows down the boilers and makes certain that the water make up system is operating properly.
  7. Performs all minor and major repairs on hot water heating distribution system. Maintains and replaces standard plumbing fixtures, components, routes stops in drainage's and cleans grease traps. Repairs or replaces leaky or corroded joints, and pipe sections, using standard items or measuring threaded pipe to fit by joining, coupling, or sealing. Makes minor repair or replaces parts on small domestic furnaces, such as gauges, switches, thermostats, and filters.
  8. Repairs broken or frayed wiring, 277 volts or less, on occasion 460 volts on a daily basis. Repairs or replaces mechanical components of electrical appliances, lighting and other standard equipment such as gauges, switches, plugs, etc. Performs test to verify if items being repaired or serviced has voltage. Takes amperage readings to determine if item being tested has proper amperage reading for efficiency.

  1. Paints ceilings, walls doors, and interior and exterior door frames and trim not normally requiring precoating of raw surfaces. Refinishes and touches up damaged surfaces. Prepares surfaces by scraping or sanding. Fills in minor cracks and holes with various patching compounds. Rolls, brushes or sprays paints using standard varieties of paint to match the existing finished texture of the surface.
  2. Performs other miscellaneous maintenance duties, such as making periodic checks and adjustments of routine electrical and plumbing needs, repairing small engines, custodial equipment, and windows and routine patching and caulking to prevent structural deterioration.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:
  1. Skill in operating equipment used in skilled trades, power and hand tools, etc.; and adhering to safety practices.
  2. Knowledge of boiler systems.
  3. Skill in maintaining and repairing water distribution systems, including domestic, tempered water for heating and cooling and irrigation systems.
  4. Ability to read plans, drawings and specifications relating to the repair and remodeling of District facilities.
  5. Ability to work independently as well as work with skilled tradespersons.
  6. Knowledge of gas furnaces, domestic appliances, heating units, LP gas piping, and various safety and pressure controls.
  7. Knowledge of electrical systems and ability read blueprints. Skill in installing a variety of electrical systems, circuits, equipment and controls.
  8. Knowledge of a wide variety of equipment and hand tools associated with electrical, mechanical and plumbing repair.
  9. Knowledge and skill in the concrete and carpentry trades, to include blueprint reading and trade techniques required to complete the given project.
  10. Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationship with others.
  11. Knowledge of general school site rules and policy.
  12. Knowledge of Governing Board rules of conduct and policy.
  13. Skill in communicating orally and in writing.
  14. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with others, requiring the ability to interact professionally and courteously with students, faculty, staff and the public.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school and sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed above including two years' general maintenance experience.

PREFERRED QUAILIFICATIONS:
  1. Hopi/Indian Preference in employment considered.
  2. Valid State Driver Licenses.
  3. Valid Arizona Department of Public Safety Fingerprint Clearance Card.
  4. Must successfully pass employment background checks within the last five years which include state, federal and local tribe.
